Slappers on MBs have a bit of downward angle on them, sort of a combo between what you show here and a straight up paddle. They work really really well. I think the downward vector of the diversion of water flow probably has a beneficial effect. Some trial and error will reveal!

My concern is that the upward lift will counteract the the boat in the rear ballast wise. The suck gates need a significant amount of ballast evenly weighted to really crank out. So Im wondering what will happen here. I am tuned in man.... cant wait to see what happens.

This looks like your on to something! Although if you wanted to change sides it wouldn't work you would have to have two or else the gate would have the wrong angle

Here are a couple graphics I cobbled together to demonstrate my theory. Here is the typical suck gate.

In this case the boat is being forced down in the opposite side corner. This is opposite to the list we typically want to generate.

Using the inclined plane my hope is you can maintain the usual suck gate advantages while also getting some list out of the deal. This should allow more offside ballast and thus a bigger wave. Right now I pretty much need to run a 100/20 rear ballast split with my suckgate.

When I started on this path the TAPS 3 retrofit wasn't offered. I'd totally consider it if my dealer could get it. At the time they said no.

Couple more pics for this week's test.

My theory is that conventional suck gates slow down the water on the opposite side of the boat however due to the trim of the boat they effectively also provide a downward push on the wrong corner of the boat. This is evidenced by the rooster tail you often see shooting upwards.

My thought is that this "suck ramp" will still delay convergence of the wave while applying an upward lift on the opposite side of the boat.

No idea how this will work but I'll post pics of my normal suck gate beside this one and see how it looks.

For now this is my view for the next week.

Have you considered a retro fit taps 3 system from Germaine? I know you're trying to do something different here and what not, but I am so impressed with taps 3. It completely blew me away, better then anything I have used before. Switching sides is so simple and it's easy. Best money I've spent on the boat so far. If I were you, I'd seriously consider it, the guys in Utah were great to deal with.

So I got my "canard" fabricated. These suction cups just open up all kinds of options! I'll post results this week once I get to sunny (and smoky) Shuswap Lake!

The best system I think would be the nautique style surf system with an avx. That would be incredible if you think about it...

Now it would be straight vertical, yes? In my case the canard would approach the oncoming water at an angle. So the front would be higher than the back.... if that makes sense.

So I've all but given up on trying to make a tab style surf accessory to go with the Vx. All my testing just seems to mellow the wave and changes its shape in a way I don't like. Since I can't add a hook or drag to the device (due to it being in the way for opposite side surfing) I just don't think it's going to work out. However the gate results are extremely promising. At this stage I won't surf without a suck gate. It still requires a list, however not as extreme of one, particularly when you are running with a small crew.

So I'm going to test a few more things... but an old idea came back to me. A couple years back I had this crazy idea about creating a canard. (http://www.tigeowners.com/forum/show...ghlight=canard) This was before the suck gate craze started, so it seemed infeasible. However now with the suck gate innovation, it is easier to strap things to the side of your boat. So my thought is to create a suck gate with something like this:

So rather than just limiting the suck gate to "crab walking" the boat, thus delaying convergence, I could also induce varying levels of offside lift. I have no idea if it would work, but it might. I'm adding this to my testing regimen. Perhaps even this weekend.
