In regards to being heavy if the gate comes off, I was thinking that if I was gonna make one the way ditch doctor is in this thread... I'd mount the magnet inside the back wall of the device then fill the whole thing up with a can of that expanding insulation foam. Make it float

Electro magnet door locks does seem like a pretty cool idea though...

Ha! Dude, as soon as I posted my previous post, I immediately started looking at electromagnets. Back in the late 80s/early 90s I think it was Renault that start messing around with camless engines that had electromagnetic valve trains. When I saw that, electromagnetics was the way of the future as far as I was concerned. The camless engine still isn't a reality (although I saw something about pneumatic valve trains being developed) but electromagnetic shocks fluid is all the rage now. Given the entire universe is shaped, in one way or another, by magnetics, I'm kinda of surprised it's not more popular. It is the key to anti-gravity, after all and therefore the key to extra-gravity. That's right, waterless ballast. J/K, that's a stupid application.

So I keep wondering if just normal trim tabs would work. They could be mounted as surf gates or as trim tabs. (still unclear as to which would produce the best results) They Cheaper then the Ronix wakeshaper and a ton cheaper then the WaveControl system. They come in a ton of sizes as well.

Here's a hint: If you look at the "surf systems" used by boat manufacturers, they pretty much all use standard off-the-shelf actuators connected to trim tabs. The biggest differentiation they have is in the shape of the metal tabs (or, in the case of Malibu, the orientation of the hinges). And as it turns out, Lenco - the predominant manufacturer of the electric actuators used in such systems - actually makes those custom tabs for many of the boat makers and ships them as ready-to-install units. The boat maker specs the size and shape and Lenco makes them as a custom tab. Remember, boat manufacturers primarily make fiberglass and upholstery... they much prefer to buy everything else and bolt it into place, rather than build it themselves.

So yes, "normal trim tabs" would definitely get you started. Do the GSA/WakeMakers tabs, or MC's "optimized for every hull" tabs, etc., have a slight advantage? Perhaps... but you'll probably get 90% of the performance with a standard Lenco tab setup. And you can order it and have it delivered in a few days.

The real challenge is the controlling electronics. And we may have something to share on that in a little while.

Um, with all due respect, (electro)magnetism and gravity are separate and distinct fundamental forces - at least at this point in the life of the universe! (They may have been combined a while back, research is ongoing.) You can certainly overcome gravity with a sufficiently strong magnetic field, but that doesn't make them the same fundamental force. And while magnetics plays a role in the function of the universe, gravity isn't just magnetism in a different form.

Not throwing rocks, but I feel this compulsion to correct physics mistakes. Just my .

Quick update. It's done! Now just have to get to the water to test it.
Side note: It will be mounted further back in the water, the guide pole is in the way while it is on the trailer.

I ended up buying one too from the boat show for $50 off. Bought it from our local boat shop (AWS in Oregon City). Good news if it I'm not happy with it, they said I could return it for a full refund (or store credit more likely...can't remember). Either way. I was nervous about the look of the Velcro so I changed it up a little.

I used their Velcro mostly but then added in some black which I got online from 3M, (their industrial outdoor and water resistant kind) and cut it to match my hull colors as I have a "swoop" headed towards the water in the rear. I bet no one would notice the Velcro from more than 10' away if I didn't tell them it was there and when it's in the water, you will barley see it. I can post pics later.
