2007 rz2 New to me, changing the steering cable, this is how it’s run over the tank. Is this the best way. Cable was a SS13419. Thanks

My turn to swap out the steering cable. I have read up on everything here & elsewhere, so other than which cable to buy, I should be good.

Same situation as Shoe's post from last summer, I have a new to me 2007 RZ2 purchased on consignment over the winter. I've had a Z1 & an R20, but we've been without a boat for the last 8-9 years. The kids are older now & they've promised me the boat will get used. They better be right! With a little research, I was able to determine the RZ2 was another member's boat. Seeing as it wasn't in the water for the inspection & I didn't consider the potential need for a steering cable with less than 160 hours on the boat, I missed the cable being an issue. Would have been nice to have that disclosed, but I got a fair price, so I guess it is what it is.

There have been a few other sketchy things I've come across while updating the boat, but I've been able to remedy most of them with a little ingenuity. For example, with the current steering cable project, I thought there were supposed to be bolts that secure the seat box to the seat base in order to remove the floor above the gas tank, but nothing like that exists. Maybe taken out & not replaced? And seeing as I literally looked at every visible inch of the cable (other than the 2-foot section under the inaccessible floor) & I cannot find a number stamped anywhere, I'm wondering if the cable was already replaced at some point, thus the seat box was likely removed previously. Anyone have any experience with an off-brand steering cable not being labeled?

Which gets me to the whole point & what cable should I be purchasing. My son & I used a very rudimentary process to try & measure the cable ~ I pulled out a tape measure. I don't want to take the current cable out until we have the new one, as I want to run the new one through while yanking the old out. Our measurement came out to 17-feet, which certainly doesn't seem right from all that I've read. Lol. In Shoe's photo, his cable crosses the gas tank from the starboard side to the port side. The cable in my boat goes a more direct route over the tank on the port side. So I suppose I could see the route on Shoe's boat making up for a little of the extra length on his SS13419, but I can't see 2-feet worth of extra. Thus I'm stymied as to what to buy. If I assume our 17-feet is more accurately 18-feet, well OK then. But that doesn't necessarily answer my question as to what length to purchase. Is it possible that two RZ2's from the same model year have different length steering cables? Or is it much more likely to assume that both of our boats had the OE cable replaced at some point previously? And so if I'm assuming 18-feet is most likely what is currently in my boat, is there any reason to go with 19-feet? And finally, what are the thoughts on whether I should go with SSC134 or the SSCX154 (Xtreme)?

And yes, I have definitely been told I'm long-winded. My bad!

Any advice & thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

        John
