    i would definitely build it yourself. it may cost about what a 'good' kit would cost or maybe a bit more, but you will end up with a better product. go to Home Depot or Lowes and go by the DIY book racks. they have a few books with DIY designs that inculde measurements and material lists. you can find some of those plans online too. you will end up with a much studier and safe unit going that route. the kits are designed to get a basic structure put together, but they lack in the reinforcing area and use lower qualtiy materials. when my sisters and i were little, my dad built us a fort using plans out of a book and i swear that thing would've survived a nuclear blast. i was in high school before i was strong enough to dismantle the thing. my cousin just built one for his two kids using DIY plans. he spent about a grand on wood and hardware and ended up with a darn castle. i plan to go that route when my son is old enough to benefit from one.
