It was a perfect time because the waves were 4 to 5 feet and it was quiet. The reef is intimidating though. If the waves were taller I wouldn't have tried it.

thats about the biggest i surfed when i was in maui. they get very intimidating to a newbie

Maui was pretty flat. I was surprised I like Oahu as a whole more than Maui.

oahu is a better island for surfing, we went one day when there were a few waves. nailed the reef and split my knee wide open glad it was the end of the trip

I just couldn't get into being in Maui. I'm more comfortable in Oahu you can have the isolation or the big city.
