I should qualify that I use a 6 foot bungee on the 'boat end' of a much longer anchor line. I buy a new one each year for $10. That way it never rots and breaks.

Otherwise, yes - you will tug all day and destroy your bungee in the process. This way you pull out the bungee and start your real tugging on the rope.

I have always done the method above with a box anchor, shore spike and bungee, and it worked, except once when it didn't. The anchor did not hold in a strong windstorm. The problem was that I was at Lake Powell and the bottom I was anchored to was pure smooth sandstone. So there was essentially nothing to set the anchor. Any anchor needs some mud, rock or debris to set itself. It was some unsettling time when she dragged herself up onto the shore at 10 PM. I then tied her onto the houseboat rear cleat with the front tied to the shore. That worked great, but I am generally not in favor of attaching my boat to the houseboat, since I had a houseboat come off anchor once.
      Be excellent to one another.

I actually got my box anchor and shore spike in the mail today! Can't wait to try them out this weekend with the danik hooks I got a few days ago

Well thanks, you guys just made me spend some more money lol! Ordered my shore spike, anchor buddy and danik hook earlier today from overtons. Already have a fluke style anchor, going to have to use that setup for a while and see how it does.

Overtons just made some money today on all of us. Just ordered a new bungee (last years was a bit tired) a shore spike and the Danik hook!! 😀 I have found the box anchor and the bungee to work quite well, I will definitely be adding a rope to the anchor for pulling it up.

Do you guys still use an anchor chain with the anchor buddy?

I think one has to spend over $150...unfortunately.

How are you guys putting the buoy in line? Is it just free floating on the anchor line to mark where the line enters the water or what? I have never used a buoy when anchoring so I'm trying to figure this out.

Also, for those worried about the anchor buddy, just do the setup they recommend and your good to go. If the anchor buddy snaps, you still have a solid line as a backup. 721549.jpg

I do, but they say I do not have to.

I should qualify that I don't use an anchor buddy, but a short bungee cord. I wonder if the longer buddy would be a smarter option.

No anchor chain with a box anchor and an anchor buddy here. I guess it might be better but it seems like a pain.

I've never had an anchor buddy break. The bungee inside broke but the line did not. That was from regular abuse though. The river we used had a little current so the line was generally stretched most times we used it. Even without the bungee, the line was plenty strong enough.

I think an extra line is overkill for how much trouble it is in general. Maybe if I knew a big storm was a brewin I would use an anchor line as well as the buddy. However, for general tie off with me watching the boat or else a nice calm night then the anchor buddy is sufficient.

Even if the anchor buddy somehow snaps, I still think that 15 years of not having to deal with an extra line is a small price to pay for having to buy another anchor.

Anyone know if Mini Anchor Buddy 7'-22' is just shorter version and can hold 4000 lbs like the 14-50'?

So I will be doing some camping with the boat shore anchored this year. I've purchased and received all the recommended stuff, box anchor, slide anchor, anchor buddy and some danik hooks. The anchor buddy says on the package not to use for anchoring over night (which is really the only time I am going to be anchoring). I am going to use the anchor buddy with an anchor line attached to it like they have on their recommended setup. Should I really listen to the package, or is this one of those things that they have to say and that everyone ignores and will be just fine if properly used?

Also, while we are on the subject, If you are using an anchor line with the anchor buddy attached to it as the image a few posts up shows at the "Tie Loop" portion, what would a good knot for this loop be? An Alpine Butterfly?

I used the anchor buddy when I first started out but found it didn't do well in windy conditions (it would allow the boat to drift too much). I'm assuming that's why they say don't use it overnight (when there's no one watching it). I guess it would depend mostly on your lake and whether you can expect wind overnight.
