The shaft alignment is checked at our dealership when the boat is being prepped for delivery and at every service. We recommend servicing the boat once a year or 100hrs.
The alignment can and does change over time and every boat is different. Once the engine mountd settle into the stringers it will most likely not change unless something comes loose. The tolerance is 0-.003". So as you can see it does'nt take much.
You can check it 2 ways. First spray some soapy water on the shaft where it goes through the strut and spin the prop. If it spins free then you are pretty close to perfect. Second, seperate the shaft coupler from the transmission output shaft and check with a feeler gauge by sliding it between the two halfs. example if you have 0" at 3 o'clock then there should be no more than .003" at 9 o'clock. All 4 motor mounts have up and down and side to side movement. This is where you will make your adjustments if needed.
Checking the alignment on a 21iR should not take more than a half hour but adjusting is another story. I fought with a 21vR for 4 hours once. So, price will depend on severity of the problem.
