So while I had the back seat out putting in new speakers and Perfect Pass I discovered that my v-drive is leaking oil. Looks like the gasket is bad as that is the only place I could find oil so it shouldn't be too bad. I think I'm just lazy enough that I'll have BofNV change it for me when I take it in for spring service. And I discovered that with the seat out, tightening the prop shaft seal is a piece of cake.

Question about this? My seal was leaking pretty good last year. I couldn't figure out why I had water in the hull when the boat just sat in the water. So I found out the seal was leaking. I was able to tighten it up, but I know you are suppose to have a drop or so every so many seconds. Is this correct? Is this at idle or under power? How do you know it is ok and will not overheat. I use it about 10-15 hours after doing this, but it is always in the back of my mind. I don't want to hurt the transmission.Originally posted by time2kyl View PostAnd I discovered that with the seat out, tightening the prop shaft seal is a piece of cake.Dale

That's correct. I think you're good. Since you used it and it didn't fail, you should be fine. Don't worry about hurting the transmission. If anything, it would damage your shaft, but that's usually not the case.Cursed by a fortune cookie: "Your principles mean more to you than any money or success."

Do I need to worry about heat? I felt the shaft and it felt warm (not hot). This was after about 5 to 10 minutes of running it.Originally posted by dogbert View PostThat's correct. Whoa, I too have my back seat out installing Perfect Pass and changing fluids and I too discovered that my V-Drive (Walter RV-26D) is leaking a little oil. I bit the bullet and removed the V-Drive yesterday and ordered a gasket set and seals from Walter. Mine leaks at the output shaft. The prop shaft alignment was less than .001" on the port side (perhaps even zero or less), and just greater than .003" on the starboard side. Per the Walter service manual, shaft mis-alignment is a major cause of seal failure.Originally posted by time2kyl View PostSo while I had the back seat out putting in new speakers and Perfect Pass I discovered that my v-drive is leaking oil. If I can't find or fabricate a spanner wrench to remove the output shaft nut I'll take the V-drive to my local machine shop and have them R&R the leaking seal. First, I'll check the run out on the output and prop shaft flanges and make sure they're true. While I'm at it I'll pull the top cover on the V-Drive and clean out the water passages as necessary.
If you do decide to pull the V-Drive yourself, set the boat nose-up and put a catch pan under the drive. I've now got red tranny fluid up under my gas tank from when I separated the V-Drive from the Velvet Drive trans. I assumed that was a dry fit, wrong...
I almost just refilled the Drive with oil and let it be, but figured I really didn't want to be down this summer with an extended outage if the thing really started leaking heavily. The shaft misalignment tipped the scales that direction as well.
