'02 21v Limited hose question

I just changed the steering cable on my 2002 21v limited. During the course of the change the two hoses that connect to the passenger side of the motor (right next to each other, each with a drain plug) were disconnected. Unfortunately the hoses and connections weren't marked and I am unsure of where they go. One hose is thicker walled and appears to be smaller in diameter and the other its thinner walled and larger in diameter.

We tried to reconnect the hoses based off of hose diameter and connection size but the thinner walled hose kept popping off and had really hot water in it. Not sure if I am doing this right and would love some help to get back on the water. Engine is a 2002 Merc 350 map mph
