    2001 21v

Hello - last week the belt on my 2001 21v began to get a little loud. It appears that it isn't as tight as it should be, but appears to be in good shape generally (not frayed or anything).

I'm looking for opinions on if I should try to tighten the belt (in other words, is this possible?) or if I should order a new one (I believe I can change the belt myself). Any insight is appreciated.

Also - the gas gauge didn't work on the boat when I bought it a couple of months ago. I've been told this is a frequent problem by multiple people but no one seems to have an opinion on what usually causes the problem....could be electrical or a problem with the sensor? Anyway, wondering if anyone has knowledge of this really happening frequently, and if it does, what is most often the cause. Thanks again for any help.

Depends on if the tensioner is adjustable or automatic. Im guessing your engine is a Merc? IIRC, the Mercs have an adjustable tensioner. Also, if the belt is real shiny and glossy or developing diagonal cracks, its best to just replace it.

        Thanks.

It is a Merc and I'm pretty it has an adjustable tensioner. The belt doesn't appear especially shiny, but I'll check more closely tomorrow for cracks. Sounds like it might be worth it to try tightening before buying a new one.

I have the same boat and it does have an adjustable tensioner on the top end of all the pulleys on the water pump side. I would go that route first, could be that the nut that holds it vibrated loose allowing some extra slack in the belt.
