So very new to ownership. Have had boats my whole life but this is the first non outboard. Bought the boat a few weeks ago. Ran great when tested. Took to mechanic to winterize and when he checked it oil it was very milky. He says engine is most likely shot. What are the things I should be double checking before scrapping the engine on a boat I just bought.

What engine is in the boat? These boat engines are relatively simple and there is not many places where water can get into the oil. Your mechanic is probably correct although there are a few edge cases where the fix is not an engine block. -

Thank you, that is just a typical small block chevy 350/5.7L. Your mechanic can do a compression check to see what cylinder is not quite holding pressure. A more thorough test would involve a leak down test to determine where the compression is going. This is assuming that the head gasket has failed.
There is a small chance it is just the intake gaskets have failed since water crosses through the intake and can leak into the valley, but most of the time it is due to a cracked water jacket because of failed winterization.Comment

It all depends on how the water is getting into the oil. If it is a bad intake gasket, then no, not a hard job really. But if the block is cracked they will recommend a new block. Reason being is that there is no guaranteed fix. Some people have been able to repair the block by grinding the crack out a little and putting jb weld over the crack, but no shop will do that since it may or may not work.Comment
