    engine won't start

I've got 2000 21V with the Mercury 350 Mag MPI engine. I was out boarding today and about an hour in the engine started to shutter and then died. I couldn't get it to start back up and had to get a tow. It acts like it's low on fuel, but it's not. Almost starts, but won't keep an idle. Any ideas on what to check?

A few weeks back, I had an issue that I'm not sure if its related or not. I ran the boat, and it was fine. After turning off the engine, it wouldn't start again. The belt wouldn't rotate, and I figured out the impeller was turned backwards (this happened once before). After taking out the impeller and turning it around, it started fine. Called Mercury customer service and they said this could be caused by a backfire. Not sure if this is related or not.

Check your fuel pressure first. Should be 32psi +- 2psi when the key is first turned on and the pump cycles. If fuel pressure is fine, check for spark using a spark checker from your auto parts store. Could be the ignition coil, could be bad fuel pump but you need to determine if its fuel, spark or compression related first.
Fixing everyone elses boat just so I can use mine...

Great, thank you. I'll give it a shot this weekend.
