    broke steering cable?

I pulled the anchor this weekend and started driving off to find I had no steering. In the back of the boat I can feel the steering cable moving in the plastic casing when I turn the wheel and then when I move the rudder I can also feel the cable moving in the casing. I'm guessing the cable broke back there somewhere? I have a 2000 21i with the rotary system. Is just ordering a new cable all I need or do I have other problems too?

There's a sleeve at the rudder end of the steering cable that could have come loose.

I checked back there and it seems everything is attached. Could it be something from the ball joint in the back to the rudder connection?

Can you move the rudder by hand under the boat? If so the cable is bad.
Moving it by hand will verify a break near the tiller arm portion of the cable, or something at the rudder is loose.

Unfortunatly you are going to have to replace the steering helm and cable. That is a Morose system on there. They no longer make any of that stuff. Teleflex makes a Tilt Helm and cable replacement for it. My closest Guess in $500.00. The next best thing is to not get a tilt Helm and it is around $300.00. I would have to look up exact pricing it to get exact price.

If just the cable is bad Teleflex does make a cable to fit the Morse 290 helm.
Here is some info on your setup:
Morse Tilt Rotary Helm Command 290 - 310742
            drive assembly - 309301
            cable, Morse - 304411-000-0204.0 (204 in = 17 ft)
            cable, Teleflex - SSC52xx (xx - ft, SSC5217)
I think the tilt part can be moved to another helm.
Here is just one place that sells the cables ($110): http://www.edsoutdoors.com/outdoors-...~item~6434.htm
            Here's another for a helm ($90): http://www.go2marine.com/product.do?no=94739F

I had to replace the helm on my 98. I don't remember the exact model I called Lee at the factory and he gave it to me. Overtons had it on my door the next day for $250. Bought a cable from a local shop for like $70 or so.

I know it's been 16 years, but thought I would update this thread.

The older cables are no longer available for the Morse Tilt Rotary Helm Command 290 - 310742. Nor are the replacement cables listed above.

did a lot of digging and eventually contacted Tige, then contacted SeaStar through a couple different channels.

                Finally got the answer.

You need to replace the helm with SeaStar SHT91523 Dash Tilt Module Kit.
Then you need the SSC6217 cable.

This is for my original Tige 2000 21V.
