Hi everyone,
Looking at different fluids to try and decrease the whine coming from my ZF41 V-drive in my new-to-me 2014 Z3 with 500-ish hours. Everything looks good with the v-drive, been tested at a local dealership with no issues, it makes the same whine as v-drives in Tiges of similar vintage and build. It also has the “Use ATF” sticker on the V-drive housing so I know that deviating from manufacturer’s recommendation could create a whole host of problems such as resultant noises from the V-drive that are much more sinister than a mildly annoying whine.
I’ve seen/read about some people using 10-30/15W-40 engine oil instead of ATF for the thicker viscosity and therefore quieter operation. My biggest question is why use engine oil that has additional additives such as detergents when a 75W-90 marine gear oil has very similar viscosity and is much more designed and suited for a v-drive type application. Any insight from any of you who would have more technical expertise in this would be greatly appreciated.
