    Adjusting the packing

I've read numerous posts here and on other boards about adjusting the packing, but I need more clarification. Here's a picture of what I think everyone's talking about. If this is indeed it, which nut to I loosen/tighten? And where exactly is the flux packing at? Inside the rubber hose?

Appreciate someone walking me through this

You would need to tighten the big nut and the packing is between the small nut and the big nut.

Here is a link to the site I used.

To tighten the packing: 1. You need a pair of Packing Nut Wrenches. I ordered mine online and they made everything easier. 2. You back off the small locking nut, the only purpose for the small nut is to hold the packing nut in place once the correct adjustment is made. 3. tighten down the large packing nut until the drip is non existent with engine off and minimal when engine is running and in gear (idle). For me this was a two person job. Wife drove and I adjusted. 4. Once you have the correct adjustment hold the large packing nut in place and tighten the small lock nut up against it. Just make sure the stuffing box does drip a little when you are done. I had mine overtightened briefly and the packing nut was HOT.

I'm sure someone else on here will have some input as they all helped me through this a couple weeks ago. This is a great place to learn!

Here is a link to the packing nut wrench I purchased:

I also opted for some "virtually dripless packing" when I replaced mine

http://www.e-marine-inc.com/products...g/packing.html there is also a good picture here of the packing nut assembly.

I replaced mine completely and it was very simple to do, once I got the right tools.

Good luck and let us know how it goes or if you have any quetions.
