1997 2150 WT - need more top end speed?

I have a 1997 pre 2150 with the 377 blue scorpion engine, 1:1 velvet drive transmission, and a 3 blade 13X13 prop (original I think). I put an after market tower on it a few years ago and since then it only runs about 41-42 mph at about 4200 RPM. I'd like to get back the 3-4 mph I lost. that engine is rated at 4800 to 5200 RPM and it's never been close. I just tuned it up last summer also.

    Thoughts?

    thanks,
    Dave

If that’s the original prop, a new one is going to be light years better. The only issue is data for more top end. It doesn’t really exist. Most everyone props down for better low speed performance and sacrifice of top end. I run an ACME 911 on mine (very similar boat). I wanted better low end. At 1000’ it hits the rev limiter real quick. Most of the year I’m over 4000’ and it’ll run almost to the limiter. I think right around 4700rpm right at 36mph on a 350mag. Basically no one reprops for better top end. That being said, it’s not rocket science. I’d contact ACME and see what they say. I imagine you’ll end up with a prop no one runs.
You'll get your chance, smart guy.

My 97 would still run 45-47 with our tower and weight in it (on a smooth day that is). I had the 350 EFI in it with the 13x13 factory prop. Dropped to 42 when I changed to a lower end prop but would launch you. Why are you wanting more speed out of it?

Wake Makers recommends an ACME 13X12 three blade the 515. I'll most likely give that a shot at $367.

        Thanks,
        Dave

I need more speed because my younger brother bought an Air Nautique 2012 (I think) and I can't touch him at WOT. Just a pissing contest; I can't think of a better reason for speed!

Going from a 13 dia x 13 pitch to a 13 dia x 12 pitch is the wrong direction, so poor rec based on your needs. You need to go up on pitch, like to a 15.

No offence, but you bought the wrong boat for a race.

I'm kind of shocked the Nautique has that much top end to it, but I guess if you only hitting 41-42 I can see that. Newest Nautique Ive been on was a 2007 but it had been set up for surfing so it didn't have a lot of top end. How much gear or fuel are you running? Loosing weight makes a big difference as well.

ACME said the 515 is the best fit. 13X12 with .08 cup. I had a long talk with one of the sales managers. I'll be going with that.

                    Thanks,

I think the goal is to get the rpms up into the max range. The much more aggressive cup should make up for the reduction in pitch. A jump of 800rpm would be huge. I’d certainly like to see the results on where it lands on rpm and mph.

I can appreciate that. My uncle’s Malibu 21 xti is faster than my boat. It’s really annoying. It’s very pretty and much faster but, my boat surfs and skis better and is more comfortable. It was funny to hear my aunt bitch at him for that. “So, his boat surfs better and skis better and is more comfortable huh? So are we selling this thing?” That little question between them gets me over the top end deal.

So this contest Between Brothers is very interesting. I have the same sort of thing going on too. When I got my boat it had one of the best waves out there including nautiques. My brother started with nautiques and of course each year upgraded. Now his boat puts out a fantastic wave however mine still does damn fine and burns a whole lot less gas doing it. Is paid for with 1300 hours on it and a lot of fun with very little problems over the last 12 years. The other funny thing is he really gets to use his and I use mine all the time. Got to just explain it on brotherly love and sibling rivalry.
