    Depth Gauge working intermitanly

2000 21v rider that has a hummingbird depth finder that most of the time only shows broken line as if no number to register from the transducer. This is connected to a transducer on the back of the boat under the swim platform. Every so often (rare) there is a reading for a very short amount of time of a depth then back to the display above. Can the Transducers go bad? Or do I just need to find break in line. It worked for a couple years then just started doing this. The transducer does not look damaged and the signal line does not seam to have any problem with it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Very sorry but it is a HawkEye indash guage

Does it act this way even when the boat is setting still in the water with the engine off?

Yes, the only on rare occasion, I see it very briefly show depth during acceleration. I can not make it happen.
