Piece on starter

Kind of hard to see but the piece that comes off the top stud where the wire from the battery goes. It is just a copper piece that extends out with additional wire hooked to it.
Replaced a starter for a friend and that didn't get pulled off old starter. Can I just hook the wires straight to the stud with the battery wire? I don't see why not but thought I should ask someone more knowledgeable than me.

You need to make sure that wasnt a circut protection in line fuse!

It is an 90 amp fuse that Mercruiser uses for protection.

Okay. good to know. Fingers crossed that the owner still has the old starter. If not, guess I'll be buying a new one.
