    Porting my storage??

I have my sub in my port-side storage. (Seat folds down for access)

It kicks out pretty decent bass when its closed, but totally rocks when that seat is folded down.

can/should I drill a hole in the side of the walkway to "let the bass out"?

Reality is only an illusion that occurs due to a lack of alcohol.

hence make a "ported" enclousre. Why not.

It is a subwoofer in a sub enclosure, correct? Not just a woofer instaled in a bulkhead?

If that is the case, you are absolutely correct in thinking a hole will "let the sound out"

Understand it will need to be a pretty good sized hole, maybe two. Typically, when we run into something like this, (and we have with other boat manufacturers) what usually works the best is a couple of LARGE holes, i.e. standard 5" speaker cutout cup-saw sized holes.

The trick is to take a couple of speaker-sized plastic rings ,wrap them in stretchy black double-knit polyester cloth, and then put them over the holes. Finish it off with a pair of spare speaker grills that can be screwed on over the cloth. That is but one way to do it; be creative, do something cool to dress the hole(s) and then share with us!

The sound is a lot better as you found...

Trust me, don't think that a single 3" or 4" hole will work. On rare occasions it will, but most of the time it will not. The holes should be large enough to prevent the storage compartment from acting like its own resonant vented enclousre.

      let us know!

      It's not an optical illusion.
      It just looks like one.....

Correct, I already built the enclosure. The woofer itselft points at the floor. The entire box sits on two composite 1x1's to keep it from sitting in water.

Hadn't really thought about stretchy poly thing...That might be cool.

        Thanks, as always Phil!!

only other problem is that typically a sub box needs to be bigger if you port it.

Not really porting the box, its more porting the storage.

jleger, just an fyi.....A Dremel on a jig works much better than a router with a template when cutting those large holes.......You are probably going to use a holesaw though I bet. I had to get a certain measurement, and there were no hole saws the correct size.
