Dom, I read the post in another thread about needing an Iso or it will kill the alt. Not completely accurate. The load on the alt is produced by the batteries and accessories. All the Iso does is seperate the "house" bank from "starting" bank as discribed already. The alternator out-put is based on the load at the batteries and the load will be the same with or with out the Iso.

Do you need one? first question, are/will your stereo batteries (1) be charged off the alternator or (2) will your batteries be "stand alone" and recharged with the tender.

If 1, then it's up to you as the Iso is just like an "automatic" Perko switch.

If 2, then the Iso will do nothing for you.

If you choose to go with an Iso, go with a 3 bank and select one that is equal to or greater than the alt Amp out-put. This is how the Iso's are rated as the load goes from the Alt to the batteries. Your stereo and other accessories will pull from the batteries to the components, but not through the Iso.

Thanks for clearing it all up. I'm doing option 1, so I'm going to opt not for one, as I have yet to leave my batteries on, when I'm not there for the last 4 years, I think I'll be ok. Plus, I plan on plugging in after every use, and since I keep the boat at my house, I should be ok, IMO. IF i do relize i want one, I'll plumb one in later, and now knowing that I can find one that will fit it will be good to go.

We'll i'll help boost ya Phil! I installed am ISO on my setup not because i needed it but because i don't have a switch and i like the hands off approach. With my grandsons onboard i have enough to think about besides worrying about "did i switch".

My Bad....

Chpthril is correct with regards to what current goes through the iso. Doh!!! The iso allows charging of all battery banks when the motor is running but has no load current going through it, other than the load that the batteries present to the charging system.

Yes, loads, (AKA, the stereo) are connected straight to the battery or batteries and do not pull through the iso, so my comment about the need for an iso with a current rating based on the load is incorrect. SO.... one of my comments above is not so correct.
