The NVSs are puuurrrrrttttyyyyy anyway. Way sexier than the wetsounds for sure.

I am a firm believer that you cannot get accurate sound reproduction out of a driver larger than 6.5"......just doesn't happen. A homebrew setup properly amped, enclosed, and aimed will kill any of those. May not be as loud, but will sound much better.

I like the looks of the NVS, but now the Wetsounds have also grown on me. For my tower, I couldn't have gone with the NVS Entity's but the Pro 485s fit fine. I also like that the Wetsounds have gone through Marine testing and that they are easy to take off and on. I have never heard the Entity's only Talltigeguy's NVS Addictions. I actually started down the path of purchasing NVS and am sure that they are a great speaker, but I am very happy with my Wetsounds. I spoke with the President of Wetsounds and Duane at NVS, they are both great guys. Wetsounds claims that they were developing their speaker at the same time as NVS. I don't want to turn this thread into a Wetsounds vs NVS, but Wetsounds are better

It all depends on how you are going to use your tower speakers, if they are for the people in the boat, then you are right. If they are for the wakeboarder, then you need a horn loaded speaker to project the music.

It all depends on how you are going to use your tower speakers, if they are for the people in the boat, then you are right. If they are for the wakeboarder, then you need a horn loaded speaker to project the music.

I have to agree 100% with that in regards to projection of the sound and loudness, but on accuracy of sound, no way.

No horn with an 8" sub is going to produce accurate vocal range, or full range, or a really crisp clean high. Loud yes, OK sounding yes, but accurate sound, hardly. BTW a horn is just a tweeter with a horn on it to control the sound wave to air transfer and off axis projection. So there is no mid range dirver, or a driver capable of moving fast enough to get out of the 8" range of frequencies on the NVS or the wetsounds line. There isn't a discussion on that, that is pure beefy acoustics. The horn (real short and real flared) allows the tweeter able to transfer some of those ranges to the horn and then to air, but it will also muddy up the crispness you usually get with standard dome or piezo tweeter, unless you are straight, make that extremely straight, on-axis; in either case you still lose out on the best of the mid range. Does that make sense? Horns kind of have a "sound" to them. I don't care for it stand alone (I do like them coupled with a regular old dome), just like I don't like a ported box (unless it has a good mid bass with it). Some people love it.......whatever sounds good to you ya' know. And again, we are talking about 60-90' back.....so any sound it going to be in a very very uncontrolled environment. The guys over at WW arguing about how "awesome" any tower speakers sound are off their rocker. it isn't awesome sounding by far.....loud, and good for what it is yes, but not awesome!

I absolutely would never spend the cash on a set of tower speakers like NVS or WS just because of the expense vs. the performance (kind of my same thoughts on a FAE).....I can get a killer home stereo for that (like those Klipsch horn/dome, sub, mid, comp towers :drool. My homebrews might not look as sexy, or project sound as far, but they will sound good enough for the listening environment; and I figure i will save about $1200 or so. For getting sound back to the rider, then you are not going to beat those monsters, but for good clean alternative, a nice 6.5" dirver will sound every bit as accurate, just not as loud.

No Argument on my end on what you said about tower speakers in regards to sound accuracy. These tower speakers were designed to be loud and sound as best as possible. They are designed to be heard by the wakeboarder, if that is not your goal then you are wasting your money.

Regarding horn loaded speakers in general, I have a pair of the old Klipsch speakers that are horn loaded and I love them. Many people complain that any horn loaded system is bright and harsh on the ears, but I love my Klipsch. (I also have B&W and Infinity system - no horns.) Horn loaded speaker is also what they use at concerts, so one could argue that a horn loaded home system gives a better reproduction of a rock concert (not a live concert hall which most systems go for). There is no question that these tower speakers are a luxury item, but so are our boats and I am already very pleased with my home systems. Also, the horn on the Pro 485s is probably larger than you think -- the Pro 80 has a shorter horn and is a smaller speaker overall. If you just won the 370 million dollar jackpot, you absolutely would never purchase a premier tower speaker (if your goal is to get music back to the rider)?

I made my tower speakers out of a set of EV Evid 6.2's and some speaker mounts I got on e-bay for $5. Essentially four 6" drivers and two 1" dome tweeters. All said and done I have about $340 in my tower speakers and though not nearly as loud as NVS or WS, they sound pretty darn good behind the boat and are exremely weather and salt proof. No offense to the NVS because I think they both look good, but I saw some on a MC that is used in salt and the aluminum that the housing is made of didn't look too great after only three months.

Moki & Spharis - Nice debate; maybe one of these days after reading all of the sound system threads, I might just begin to understand acoustics. It's obvious you both have an ear for this stuff. For me, loud and clear 100' back as well as in the boat is what I'm after. My Wetsounds do this and I am satisfied. They may be pricey, but so was the boat, so it makes it ok, or so I tell myslf and the wife.
Now if you put a set of Pro 80's on a golf cart like I saw in the dunes last week, thats just having to much extra cash on hand.
Again, nice job guys, I learn a little more everyday on this site.

Duane at NVS as known of this problem, and he will help make it correct, as they do tend to rust.

This thread is all a matter of opinion. I love my NVS, and Love hearing the tunes way out!! Also love rocking the beaches. SPharis is right, it will never be clear, but loud YES!!

This could be a he said, she said. I want to hear the wetsounds, and I hope MOKI and I can meet up one day and compare. It should be fun!

The housings weren't rusting, they were pitting. I hope Dom and Moki get their comparison this summer so we can have an even comparison
