I have recently purchased a ported box that will be getting placed under the helm after I cut the wall. My question is, should I cover the box with poly or some type of coating and should I do the same to where I cut the wall??

Is it an off the shelf MDF trunk liner carpet covered automotive box or a custom built marine box built specifically for the woofer you will be running? If the first, did it come loaded with a woofer or is it just an empty box ready for a woofer?

Haha, I am really new to this stuff, it is your " off the shelf MDF trunk liner carpet covered automotive box.... I was going to completley cover the mdf with some type of epoxy or sealant to keep moisture out..

Dont sweat it, I just needed to know where we were starting at. Next question, how much power are you going to be driving the sub with and what sub? Reason I ask is because most of those boxes are 5/8" MDF with stabled joints and maybe some glue. Also, the terminal caps are often only glued in. Next, if you are going with a heavy sub, the 5/8" MDF baffle-board (front with the hole) will not support it. With a sold amp driving it, its possible to buss a seam. Now, being a ported box, does reduce this as compared to a sealed where the internal pressure can get pretty high.
To prep the MDF box, I would pull the carpet and clean and prep the surface as best as possible. This box needs to be resin coated with 2-part epoxy inside and out including the port if its an MDF slot port as opposed to an ABS Euro port. A couple of coats should do.
Once thats done, I would either leave it naked, coat it with a rubberized polyurethane bed liner or a marine grade carpet. This step is really for looks.
Last, the box needs to be off the floor on some feet of some kind. Rubber feet, Trex decking blocks or HDPE blocks. I think I am going to make a cover "plate" to hide the cut out and only show the sub and grill (which I am getting from you), good call on something to keep ventilation flowing. Ill update pics as I complete the project, at least it should be worth a couple good laughs from you pro's,
