volume goes up in spikes on my clarion

The volume does not go up gradually on my head unit like its supposed to, meaning every time I hit the volume button to turn it up it should get a little louder with every click but it don't. It stays the same relatively quite until 12 on the volume then it gets louder and stays the same until you get to 22 on the volume and it gets really loud all of a sudden. Its kind of like getting in a car only to find out that someone turned the radio volume all the way up before they shut it off, if you know what I mean.Is there any way to correct this or is it just a bad head unit?

    oleblue,

This could be within the source unit. If you have a removeable faceplate try cleaning up the contacts first with a pencil eraser or with tuner wash and a very soft toothbrush. If that fix takes then coat the contacts with dielectric grease to provide a barrier against corrosion.

You may have experienced some water damage. If your Clarion has a rotary volume control, then take the top off the chassis and rinse the pot with tuner wash.

If you have hardwired remote controls then disconnect that cable from the back of the chassis to see if the problem corrects itself.

This is the source unit that I have.

It doesn't have detachable face or a rotary volume button. I haven't tried to disconnect the plug from the back of the unit. I will give that a shot today and see what happens.

I can't even find a clarion xmd3 to replace it with. Anybody know of another source unit that I can use the same plug with without having to rewire everything.

CMD4, CMD4A, and CMD5 will drop in, wire up and work with your remotes. The only diff id that the XMd3 has a larger OD, so a couple of the original screw holes will show.

I'm pretty sure. If the plug is not identical, the wire colors should be.
