Finding a Web Site Host

Don't get the wrong idea, That is literally a Rough draft, a sketch, a doodle on an electronic napkin if you will. By no means was I looking to put that on the web sit. That was an idea in my head that I threw together just to see what it might look like. Cant believe you'll really thought I was thinking I had a finished product. Oh, yeah, ya'll musta missed the non-productive discussion in the 3WPH thread about finding a Graphic Artist or purchasing the proper software

Now that I have an idea of what I want, I am on a quest to find out how to do it right. Too bad we don't still live in a pencil and paper world, I could use my 4 yrs of art, and 3yrs of drafting to do that free hand.

No, if ya'll are done making fun of my kindergarten art, is there software out there that will do what I need, but is not in the thousands of dollars range, or would I be better off having it done. That's kinda what I was looking for here, not to critique the actual art.

CHP - You're better off having it done professionally... It would be a waste to buy something that you're going to use once or twice that won't deliver artwork that's as good as the pro's use... I may be able to help you... I have all the software (Illustrator/Photoshop/etc.) but my time is a little tight right now... I'll talk to some people I know who are looking to enhance their portfolio to see if they'll do it for cheap or maybe even free... I'll PM you with details in the next few days...

Unfortunately most if not all DC's will have a power outage of some type or down time, sometimes its out of the DC'c control.

Everyone claims 99.9 % uptime but to me that is just a number in my opinion.

It is a number but it's pretty accurate when you do the math... I won't bore you with the exact details because I'm fried from work today and it would take too long, but it is a correct number...

It depends on your budget and how much you are willing to spend you can get a basic graphics editor program for around $100.00. I cant think of any off the top my head though that would suite your needs. Everything I use is pricey.

You also need to make sure the logo is in vector format (.eps, .ai). This format allows you to print it and scale it at any size without loosing quality.

Now, $100 for a software program is not that bad. I would expect to spend more for something.

I would rather spend $200-$300 and have someone do it, do it right, in a reasonable time frame, instead of buy a program that I may use once or twice.

The amount you spend is going to depend on how well you can communicate your idea and so forth to the artist, and how good he is. It should cost you a few hundred, but less than a grand.

I have all the software, Adobe CS3 design suite and all you can imagine. And I am good at it when I need to be. Especially taking art and putting it to a page with programming around it. But it takes an artist to come up with a classy unique design. I always see people who make stuff, and you can see they used the emboss filter here, and that filter there. When its pro work, you don't know what they used to do it, because they don't think, "hey, I bet an emboss will look cool". They see a unique design in their head, and use the tools to achieve that design. If the final product shows off the tools, then it isn't a pro. Just my 2 cents, but I have been hiring artists for years, and used to be in print.

I think for simplicity's sake, I will just host @ godadd.com. I reg'd my domain.com there, so I wont have to pay a transfer fee if I host there. Their rates seem to be in line with some of the others that you guys have given, thanks.

Anhaney has given me some info about what he is using to build his site, so I will look into that, as well as the online tools and templates.


Here are the 2 plans that I'm looking at. Do you guys see any red flags about these? Something that may not allow me to do what I want (as outlined in 1st post) The biggest thing I'm looking at is the storage space 5g v's 100g. If I look at it in terms of pictures, it puts it into perspective, but in terms of web pages

IMO, If it was me I would go with the 100g plan, the last thing you would want to keep up with is disk space. The 250mg bandwidth isn't a whole lot either. Also its only a couple of bucks and it gives you piece of mind.

Other than what you have said I cant see anything wrong with it.

Thanks. To me $75 a yr is not a lot of money. My Gallery will probably be the biggest consumer of space I guess. I plan on Showcasing most of the installs I do as basically my resume.

godaddy has opened up alot more support lately as well. Before a few months ago, I referred to them as the socialists of the hosting world. I think you did fine by using them as your host since you already had an account. I have hosting/parking/registration through about a dozen different providers and sometimes get tired of going back through email to get refreshers on where things are.

You will be VERY unlikely to even come close to filling the econ plan from godaddy with a starter site. You can always upgrade if you need to.
