It's expensive, but you spend your money different. Housing is high, but if you live on Maui or Kauai then your entertainment is primarily the beach and ocean. I lived well on Maui even though I didn't have a big bank account. Different way of life, oh and I owned a home there too, home ownership is not out of reach in Hawaii...... -

I've been to Raleigh and Charlotte and really like the area, most of my family is in Nashville area so it would be nice to be closer.
