    HOLY SH#$T!!!!

Well I know we all like to see pictures on this forum so here are some good ones I took the other day...I will tell the story after the pics...Nobody was hurt!

This happened last week on one of our pipeline projects. We had completed a new pipeline over a mountain pass. This was a subcontractor we use on a frequent basis. He was seeding the new right of way. He was about 50 feet in the air and doing approximately 30 mph. Conditions were good and there was good light. Very experienced pilot...and very lucky I would say. Engine failure, mid flight...too low to auto rotate....scary. He almost managed to save it, he was flying over a slight incline that was very close to the trajectory of his "hard set down". After the investigation its seems as he was able to set down, as he touched down the tail came up and the main rotor knocked his tail off. He skidded about 50 feet and hooked a large rock with one of the skids and tipped him over on his side. Walked away without a scratch...

That is a risk you take while flying inside the Height Velocity diagram (HV diagram) also known as dead mans curve. He is very lucky not to be a dead man! Sounds like a pretty good pilot to have walked away.
