make sure your keys are on some type of floating key ring.

make sure you know what you need to have on the boat - there are USCG mandated things ie. horn, flares, whistle, fire extinguisher, life vests including one throwable, etc.

Stock a small toolbox especially for the boat.

Drive fast and take chances getting there - not so much coming home (decrease speed to 5MPH and curse at anyone that comes within 100yds of your boat/trailer.

When I bought mine, the requirement was 3 flares - suckers expire on a bi-annual basis.

It seems that the distinction is now "visual distress signals" with the qualifier that they must be visible at night. Now sure what else might qualify???
