    My 10 year old isn't getting a phone any time soon. At 12 when he can stay home alone, that is when I will think about it.

              We got our kids (7 & 9yrs.)a phone a couple of months ago. It ended up being cheaper to get three phones than two. I don't know how the Sprint guy did it, but the three phones are 5$ a month cheaper than only two. And all three have unlimited data. We just send it with the kids if they are going out in the neighborhood to a friends, so we can find them when needed. It does not leave the house unless we give it to them.
