I used to think they would be great for boats but the increased surface area of the tires with an empty bed and empty trailer and only rear wheel drive means trouble on slippery boat launches. No matter how big the truck is, I'll always get 4wd. Personal opinion but I think 4wd is more useful for a boat hauler than a diesel engine. Or course a diesel 4wd is the best option if it fits your lifestyle needs. Here is a pick of my neighbors diesel 4wd and his trailer boat:
