The front sail tacks with the main... The cool thing about cats is they go so fast, apparent wind is almost always forward, so sheeting angles are almost always tight.Originally posted by Fiveflat View PostHey Phil, what do you do with that front sail? Is it pretty much stationary and you just jib the main? It's not an optical illusion.

If you move the boat through a turn where the blowing wind crosses the front of the boat, we call that tacking, and the sails move relatively slowly from one side to the other as the wind blows across them from front to back.Originally posted by Fiveflat View PostOh, I thought swinging that main sail back and forth when going into the wind was called "jibbing"
See, I know very little.
If you move the boat through a turn where the blowing wind crosses the REAR of the boat we call that a jibe, (ling "I") or Jibing, (again long "I"). I{n this instance the sails can potentially move from one side to another with enough force to break stuff, as the wind will end up blowing across the sails from back to front.
Tacking is good, Jibing can be good, but it has to be done in a controlled manner, otherwise it is usually dangerous, especially on these little rocket ships. It's not an optical illusion.

No problem! Thanks for the pull and you scored with a great boat purchaseOriginally posted by mls6722 View PostJust got back from the lake with Majestic - I learned a lot. Thanks Majestic. And the weather was not too nice, so we had the lake pretty much to ourselves.
