2008 22VE Steering Problems

Has anybody else had problems steering with their 22VE with a heavy load in the boat? I had 10 people totaling about 1200# in mine and I could not turn my boat to the right while cruising at 30 MPH. When you turned the baot it roll over a bit and then lock up. No matter how hard you turned the wheel it wouldn't turn and I had to use two hands on the wheel (with much force) to get it to come back left. It wasn't a fluke because I stopped and restibuted the weight and it did the same thing. Very scary!

I'd check the cable and rudder connection. It sounds like something's loose down there.

I have that happen on my RZ2 every now and then, no idea what causes it. It only happens when we have the ballast setup for surfing. On mine, I can usually turn the wheel to the left a little bit and then it will go right. Cable checks out fine too on mine.

No this isn't a mechanical problem this is a design problem. When the boat tilts to turn it locks you in. The boat is tilted, the rudder is slightly turned but the boat is going straight and once it happens it takes everything you got to get the boat back level and in control. It only happens with a heavy load.

I wouldn't call it a "design problem" but more of a design characteristic of a boat. Sailboats would experience this if they had the same amount of rudder in the water as towboats IMO. I have noticed it myself, but only with way more weight......somewhere near 2k of extra people and ballast.

That's weird, 1200 lbs of people isn't a lot of weight for a 22 Ve. A couple of the guys that ride around here are usually running double that in ballast alone.

Sound like it only happens when the recommended weight limits are exceeded. I know we all do that, but we need to also expect the boat to handle differently when design limits are exceeded. I know my 00 handles differently when loaded up. Does it happen when lighter loads are in the boat?

Yeah, but only 10 people in that boat with no ballast, I wouldn't think it was an issue.

I have had it happen on my 24V a few times with very few people in the boat and no ballast. Kind of a chine lock. I just back off throttle a little or adjust taps and its back to normal. Has not happenned in a while though. I can't afford to go 30 mph

I've had it happen a few times in my 22v. Normally when I have quite a bit of weight in the front of the boat. Scary at first, but now I just slow down, and it corrects its self.

10 people @ 1200 lbs? I could be wrong, but sounds like the right male:female ratio to me.

That's weird, the same sort of thing happened to us this weekend. Our normal crew is 6 people but we had 9 this time and it kind of 'locked up' for a bit. I had to back off the throttle and it went back to normal.

I have it happen periodically when I'm towing a loaded 4 person tube. Only in rough water with the tube !

wow this seem dangerous to me. Has anyone contacted their Tige service rep about this? I sure would not want this to happen to me when I am turning to evade a log a stump or any object in the water and the boat won't turn to the right! I might land up posting "How I sunk my boat" post if I buy 1Labs.

Chine lock is pretty common in most boats if the right conditions exist. It was really prevalent on my SeaDoos. Not fun when going 50+ and no turny I kind of have a feel for it now before a turn is even necessary and make the necessary corrections.

A few years ago this was discussed on this forum. No time to look for the thread now though

Might as well call all the factory Reps for every boat manufacturer out there as any and all boats will do this when overloaded
