Sounds like it's time for a new cable. If the boat sat with water in the bilge, then it's probably rusted.

I use WD-40 which stands for water disbursment to clean the cable every two or three trips to the lake. Then I use Silicone Spray Lube which you can find and a local hardward store IE home Depot to provide lubrication. The big mistake that people make with WD40 is they think it is a lubricant which it is not. Never had a problem yet knocking on wood.Originally posted by spharis View PostCables are made of metal. The bilge pump will need about 2-3 inches of water before it will actually pump. Fill it up in your driveway if you want to test it. It is probably working fine.
If you smelled coolant, then it is likely leaking somewhere. You can't smell coolant burn, but you will smell it when it evaporates off something hot. If the engine had manifold leak or similar, then the boat would blow white thick smoke when you started it up. Did you notice any of that? If you did, then you have a leaking gasket or similar.

Good idea, I'll have to try that. I'm getting more water in my bilge due to wakesurfing (comes in the blower vent on my boat). Dog, here is a bilge pump that I am thinking of. A lot faster than the standard one Tige puts into the boat and could be overkill also.

Chain lube, which you can pick up at your local cycle gear store (or motorcycle dealer), is usually both. The stuff I put on my CRF's chain is a godsend. I even take my chain off periodically and soak it in a tupperware container filled with this stuff. The blue label PJ1 has an additive that helps preserve rubber seals (meant for o-rings, but should be beneficial to seals at either end of the steering cable!).
