    Advice for first boat purchase, $40kish budget

    Looking to purchase my first boat, will mainly be used for surfing, I am regular footed, will be financing, not leaning towards any certain brand or type just yet, just looking for the best wave for the money I'm willing to spend, $40k ish budget.

    Question:
    I will be test driving this 2006 22ve tomorrow but it doesn't have any ballast in it. I asked how much it would be to add it and he said it is around $3k and it would add 1600lbs. Doesn't that sound high? How hard would it be to get a friend to help me install it? How should I approach the test drive without knowing what the wave will look like once the ballast is in? How is the wave on these boats, anyone use theirs for mainly surfing?

    Also looking at this 2011 R20 with the surf package. I have never surfed behind a 20 foot boat, for those that own one or have, how is the wave?

    I have a 14 z1 but the r20 wave is great have ridden one with surf ballast and it is pretty impressive.

      22ve all the way Great boats for surfing and any other water sport. Ballast will run you around 3K installed by a dealer as around 2k will be in parts. 1600lbs ballast is a good start with that boat but nowhere near enough weight. After purchasing it assuming everything checks out, get with member CHPTHRIL on here or go to mikesliquidaudio.com and have him get you everything you need for ballast. I got all my supplies from him a year or so back and spent prob around the 2k mark. Make sure you get the custom sacs he sells or the Z3 sac for the rears as the 1100lb basic sacs won't be enough weight and you be left disappointed and buying them later. I along with several other members on here have done the installs and have posted on here so the task is very easy to do if you are somewhat hand with a drill and basic wiring.         Another thing to consider is the lake you will be boating on. Meaning I've heard some of the guys on here comment about the chop on Texas lakes and that 22ve will handle the larger lakes way better. You won't even want that 20ft out on a windy or breezy day.

          Thanks, PMed CHPTHRIL. Dealership just called and someone scooped up the R20 last night so no test drive on that one today. I think I'll be test driving the 22ve Friday afternoon now so we will see.

                Take several of your heavier friends along on the test drive, and use them as human ballast. Might not equal the full weight of a good ballast system but it's a fast and easy way to see how ballast will affect the wave you'll get. Plus, most people will welcome the opportunity to spend some time helping you pick "your" new boat!

                  A Lot of good lakes and boat options in that area for sure!

                  Im up in lubbock with a 2009 22Ve that is loaded out and has all the bells and whistles. If you are up this way for any reason and want a tet drive give me a bit of lead time and would be happy to demo it with you. (Needing a new steering cable currently, but not winterized it is stored in my personal heated barn so hard to get it out and sit at a shop if it freezes then they have to winterize it real quick)

                    OK so R20 is gone already so I just went and looked at the 22ve, I'll test drive it Friday. The boat is in really good condition from what the eye can see. Less than 200 hours, no tears in the vinyl, no dings on the bottom of the boat, stearing cable just replaced in December, engine bay looked clean (although I dont know what to look for there), upgraded sound system with kicker speakers, JL audio tweeters and 4 JL audio tower speakers. As for the ballast, there isnt any. They can do a 1250lbs L sack on the portside, 850lbs sack on starboard side and two 200lbs sacks in the bow. They would be Flyhighs with Tsunami pumps for around $3k extra. How does that sound? What should I look for or do in the test drive to learn more?

                      Test drove the 2006 22Ve today. Y'all were right, Speed Set didn't work!!! Well, actually the speedometer wasn't moving therefore Speed Set wasn't working properly. I could hear/feel the Speed Set kick on but then it wouldn't do anything after that. Another thing that happened was when I was going about 25-35mph (no clue cause speedo wasn't working) I was putting the wake plate from 8 -> 1 and the whole engine shut off and the alarm BEEEEEEP went off. Temp was fine, oil was fine, everything on the dash looked fine, we couldn't figure it out. So with those issues and it having no ballast at all..... I'll be looking for something else. What a bummer :-( Other than that I loved that boat! I did bring an Enzo sack with me and threw that in the locker, wave looked pretty decent.

                        Sorry to hear it didnt work out. It looked like a nice boat from the pics. I imagine the dealer will have to figure out whats wrong before they will sell it. I guess you could always let them fix everything and then try it again. The speedset and speedo not working might be something as simple as a bad paddlewheel. Not sure about the engine shutting down, never heard of that just from running the Taps plate up and down.

                        Any chance you looked at the black RZ2 that dealer had? They have pretty much the same hull as the 22ve, just different styling. Its also newer so it won't have the speedset issues. I looked for a 22ve since i always preferred the traditional bow but ended up with a RZ2 and am very happy with it.

                          I'd love to get an RZ2 (love the pickle fork) or even a Z1 but most I am finding are just out of my price range.
