There's nothing wrong with wood if it's done correctly, period. Sanger has been using wood on all their boats since they started making them and continues to this day. I've never heard of a Sanger owner having rot issues and my brother-in-law has an '89 and some great friends have a '05 V215.And you are right about the stiffness! The V215 is the most solid boat i've ever ridden in bar none. In order to get a composite boat that stiff, they have to beef up everything else and even then there's still some degree of flex. I think most have gone to composite for the ease of it and cost factors.
