    Bad start........to what was hoped to be a good season

    So, to give some history on the problem...... I drained my boat last late fall and then had my marina shrinkwrap the boat. Get it out today...... Clean it up a bit, hook all the hoses up, put the plugs back in the block. Back the boat into the water and it cranked up almost instantly *love the sound of that motor* Lifted up the engine cover to see if I missed a hose anywhere........saw some water so I quickly shut off the motor and inspected the area. Port side front frost cap blew out!!!!!!!!!!! After about losing my breath and pissing my pants, I walked over to the marina and had one of the guys come over and take a peek *thanks toby* and the look on his face will haunt my dreams for the rest of my life!!!!! He is "hoping" that after they suspend the motor and beat the frost plug back in that we will be ok. Me being Mr. pessamistic I highly doubt as much! Anyone else have this nightmare happen to them????? I hopefully will find out within a week or two if the block is ok. The biggest thing that I didn't do in the fall when I drained it was stick a screwdriver or something up into the holes to move any rust or anything out of the way. Is this what all of you do???? or do you just have your local marina do it for you?

    Or by chance does anyone have a spare 12K laying around for a new motor??????????

    im pretty sure you could buy a motor for much less for that .

        i could prob. buy to new cummins motors for my truck for 12 grand. keep you rhead up man it will all work out.

          Check your insurance. You might be able to get some money from them.

            So the freeze plug just popped out? Is there damage around the block anywhere? If not, I think you can just put a new freeze (frost, whatever) plug in the block and you're good to go as long as there is no damage to the block or any obstructions inside of it.

            When I built the engine in my Corvette I had to pull the freeze plugs out of the block that I was using for the buildup and the machinist just put new ones in after the machine work was done.

              Just to let you know I know motor are about half that. let mine run out of oil and had to replace to whole thing at beginning of last summer. looking about 6K if the motor is bad

                The point of freeze plugs is obviously to protect your motor. Hopefully this freeze plug did just that! Think happy thoughts!!

                  One of my friends told me to check and they said they don't cover any "frost" and or winterization problems. Sooooo that one is out.


                  The block had a small "rust" area, but we were hoping that it had nothing to do with anything in the block. Also, I thought that if the frost plug did pop out that was "kind" of a good thing???? problem is that it's the front one behind the motor mount!!! So, I will at least have 300-500 possibly in time for putting that plug back in.... *sigh* But it's alot better IF its that much then a new motor! Definitely bummed... My 4 year old is so excited to get in the water this year on his LF board! Anywho. I hope all of you are right that it'll work its way out! Thanks for the kind words

                      You are correct most boat ins policies will have a freeze exclusion.

                      when you drained it did you not trailer it around.....I always pull the plugs and hoses and then drage the boat around for a little bit up and down hills to make sure all poss water is out.

                      You can get a new motor for about 6k. check where the rust is on the block....see if there is a crack there and if the block is pushed out from the expansion of the water when freezing.

                        Another option----Move to AZ where we don't worry about winterizing our boats. We can find some smooth water for you somewhere. Good luck-hope the plug did what it was born to do.

                          Man, that sucks. I've had two friends have that happen (they were both mastercrafts). From talking to a few service places, at least with some boats, the engines in some inboards are in at a slight angle. Older MC's, for example, are apparently notorious for this. Bc of this angle, it is possible for water to get trapped. When I do mine, I always put a little piece of wire in there and wiggle it around. This tends to remove any obstructions. Antifreeze also ads a little piece of mind. Anyways, best of luck with this, and I look forward to seeing pics of the little guy on his new board

                            Well, day 2 and I haven't heard from the Marina yet. I know this is a busy time of the year so I just hope they have time to get the plug popped back in before the end of the month. I've talked to a few other people and they are being pretty optimistic as well as most of you. I hope that my luck goes that way and not the other. I mean if that plug popped out then it "did" do it's job! Let's keep thinking it did.


                            thanks again for the input everyone. And the comment about driving the truck around after draining is a great idea, that and using a skinny screwdriver or something to push around up in those plug areas would be good as well. Keep your fingers crossed.

                              Well, it sounds like you drained most of the water out of the block so it's probably ok. I bet the freeze plug did it's job (fingers crossed).
