Check these bad boys out; http://www.plasmaled.com/high_power_module.htm look at the 008 3 watt magnifying version, red, blue or white, aluminum housing and it mounts from the rear. You could use a rubber gasket with sealer and it would be totally waterproof and super trick looking. Best of all the 3 watt version is only $20

I don't know that the 009 is waterproof though. Looking at the 008 i noticed it has a real thick housing. I'll bet you could have a machine shop cut some threads in that and use a outer ring nut which would work even better, especially after being sealed.

I have noticed that waterproof LED's are dirt cheap. Most of the OEM are just mounted on the transom and then a wire and switch on the dash. I have been wondering if it would be so much cheaper to do it yourself. I find it hard to beleive that they are worth a $500 option.

It seems it would not be much labor to just drill a hole, seal it up, run wire and have your own underwater transom light.

Am I missing something here?

So i contacted Innovative Lighting about the three led version, the Starr Light. I wanted to know about application and brightness, here's the responce i got back:

In response to your questions about the Recess Starr Light. Yes, it will work for underwater transom lights on your boat. It will require a 1.25" hole for mounting and as for the brightness, you can compare it to the brightness of a refrigerator light bulb. I hope this answers your questions.

If it's anywhere near as bright as the bulbs in my fridge it should work pretty good. No where near as bright as the Abyss lights but it should be ok. Add two or three and you're rockin'

Those are the $200 + lights that defeat the purpose of trying to be a cheaparse. I suppose it still saves a bit of coin, but I was wondering if this job can be done well for under $50.

Probably, especially for a freshwater boat, I like to see things made for a saltwater environment since that is where I boat. A friend of mine is trying to make some out of polycarbonate with a stainless bezel to look good, if he ever gets these things made they will be awesome, they will be about as bright as the $1000 ones for about $100 each. Plus instead of round he is planning on making them about 6 inches long and 1.5 inches tall, that way the light will spread across the transom instead of being in a ring...should look good. Here are some a dude made out of acrylic on one of the fishing forums I visit...similar concept, just not as sleek.

The DM -302 shank is only 0.53 inches long. I suspect my transom is a little thicker. I don't know much about lumens, but it sounds like the good ones put out a few hundred lumens. These are only in the 40 ish range, so not very bright once you get them in.
