I agree with dogbert on this one. Except when I was in Texas and he took me out on his boat he provided all the drinks, the gas, the boat, & equipment. We then went to dinner afterward with his family I tried to pay for the dinner and his wife would not let me do that either. I appreciated it but man I felt guilty. By the way he has a great family and his boys crack me up. They are full of energy with out question.

Andy, the reason I wouldn't let you buy me dinner is that my whole family came along. No worries. Sounds like you'll be back so you can take me to dinner then. My mom showed up somewhat unannounced, so I was feelin' a bit guilty as well.

But don't tell that to yllw20, he brought beer. I did arrange for the guys from Austin Surf Company to demo some boards for us.

I never ask anyone for gas money, food, drinks, or cleanup. My friends that do offer up the above are at the top of the phone list. They usually do most of the above, and insist that my wife and I are the first and last people to get a tow (best water).

Another thing that gets me going is beeing late to the dock. I get steamed while sitting at the launch ramp waiting for friends while someone else is enjoying the butter.

A few summers back we were without a boat. A buddy of mine had a membership at a private lake. I flipped him a $100 each time he took us out. I insisted because I know that with the membership, gas, etc. we were still getting off cheap. Guess who was a the top of his boat phone list.

Has anyone ever done a cost analysis of what your boating season costs? gas, maintenance, new equipment, registration, boat depriciation, truck gas, food, drink, insurance, etc.

Then devide it by the number of times you went out. I bet we'd all cry!

I did it per hr of what I put in last summer (06) it was 34 an hr that I spent, granted I got a lot back. and that doesn't count the truck gas. Now that is per hr the boat is on. so that's hardly fair really. If you count the hrs I was at the lake It would be about 7.50/hr

Um....My boat doesnt use so much gas its normally not a problem for me to NOT charge my freeloaders but...I do like to go eat chili fries after I ride on the way home sooooo...PAY UP BIZNAATCH! That was just a joke guys I usually am a "softy" too but hey the way prices of Gas are these days its always a pit stop at the gas station wether I need gas or not. It could be worse they could be riding some other type of boat that waste a full tank of gas in just half a day,(brothers boat). Hey theres a point in time YOUR just gonna have to, like the saying says..." GROW SOME BALLS", to just tell them its not cheap to:
1. Fill er' UP!
2. Carpet Clean the rug.
3. New Ranned Over rope that THEY screwed up cause they cant drive worth a ****.
4. Upholestry repair THEIR kids happened to screw up with some pocket knives their grandparents gave them and thought it was cute to whip it out on MY BOAT!.
5. and finally to FREAKIN DRINK ALL MY BREW and still have the nerve to say,"THATS ALL YOU BROUGHT"?

I have a random gorup of folks that go out. So there generally newbies on the trips. If I got out as much as I would like probably not so many newbies. People either meet us in 1 of 3 places, my house, the gas station or the lake. There are times people are running late and have to meet us at the lake instead of the gas station so I make sure to tell them to bring drinks and such. Most of the "older" folks offer up gas money or ask what we need for drinks snacks. Its the damn kids that go out...early 20s , damn I'm getting old, that seem to forget these things. On top of it all they are generally the ones that are late and want to bail as soon as we get back to the dock. They say let me know next time you are going out, that was fun. Of course they don't get called back since they contribute nothing to the experience except me having to wait for them at the dock and the added ballast they provide...which I can replace with a sack.
I've got a decent system for after the boat is out of the water. Generally my roommate and one person stay in the boat and clean up (handing trash, leftover food and drinks and the like to folks on the ground) plus they wipe everything down. I spray and wipe down the hull, I've had help doing this and found it is easier if I just do it myself. I have the other people that are standing around take the trash to the dumpster or put the other stuff from the boat in the back of my truck. Its not a perfect system, but it works.
My general rule for gas is that the first trip is a freebie, but after that expect to kick in some $.

My theory is I'm taking the boat out anyways so I pay for gas, but drinks and food are everyone else's responsibility. I also have a friend with a boat so we alternate taking the boats out to even out gas/maintenance. As far as cleaning up goes, I'm kinda anal about the boat so I pretty much do that myself. Plus some of the people that board regularly go out just cruising with us and they always bring lots of good food for the grill and plenty of drinks, and since I'm a total beer snob that doesn't stay cheap. I've never had anyone straight up ask me to go out, but I think if it did happen then I would have no qualms about asking for some gas money first.
