gman, you got lucky on the Dodge intrepid. Having been a Dodge Technician in my former life those things were the absolute worst for timing belts and water pumps going out. The water pump would let go and since the T-Belt drove the pump it would take out the T-Belt when the bearings went out in the pump. I replace a least two of those a week in the dealer. Piece of JUNK 3.5L Then the spark plug tubes would leak oil into the tube causing the engine to misfire what a pain I could go on about those pieces of crap. Not to be saying anything bad about your car I am sure it lasted and I am sure there were a few out there that survived with no issues but I do want to share my experience that was not so good with them.

Just like anything if you take the time to take care of it it will last. But I also was a BMW technician and I own a BMW. IMPO I can tell you the European cars (as we refer to them in the Auto Industry) are over build and over engineered. As a result of this they will out last the American cars any day. The big negative to them is when the do break it cost $$$$$$$$.

what's your opinion on BMW's? I hear they like to break down a lot. but just wondering. Maybe we should take this to a different thread though as not to jack this one.

Thats what I got. 7.3 PSD in my 2002 Excursion. Sounds like a pure to me too. Maybe a little bit of a growl.

i love my 7.3 dog them all you want, I have ZERO problems with it. Yeah it doesn't get the amazing mileage the new one's get, but it's paid for and it does the job so WHO CARES!!

I'm suprised you get bad mileage even w/ the lift and tires... or maybe I just missed the joke since you mentioned the "amazing mileage" the new one's are getting. But I know my buddies excursion w/ the 7.3 gets damn good mileage even while towing!

I get 18 to 19 MPG on the freeway if I stay between 65 and 70MPH. Once I start pushing the RPMs above 2000 or 73MPH the mileage drops quickly.

Drove to Mammoth last week and was doing about 78-80MPH with 4 snowboards on the roof and got about 16.4MPG

Not bad for an 8000lb oil burner.

If I keep it under 70 mpg I get about 15-16 while towing.

under 70mpg 18ish not towing.

well my 04 cummins gets like 13 lol... even if im loaded. it pretty much gets the same al the time.... more horsepower the less economic its gonna be on fuel i guess.

I know of 3 other people ( small sample) that had the dodge intrepid same year as mine (97) and loved it with no problems at all. Just like me all they did was change oil do some basic maintenace like brakes and tires and drive. I had the 3,5L engine and I tell you that thing just ran and ran and I used 87 octane and got 27.5 mpg on the open road. I did replace the original fuel pump at about 193K miles. I replaced the original timing belt at 125k (it did not break) but I look at these as ordinary maintenance items. By the way, I purchased it used from Enterprise Car rental. I guess our experiences are different.
