um, i'm under the impression that all an isolator does is make sure the batteries do not discharge when the alt is not on. If you turn the perko switch then they don't discharge.

An isolator is a switch that basically checks for voltage level of the batteries and allows the altenator to charge the weakes battery. Or when all the batteries get below a certain voltage level the isolator will allow all of them to be charged. Yes basically all it is is a switch but it is all automatic and changes the loads as needed to the alenator allowing it to work less and it also makes it easier for you to not have to worry about switching a switch all the time. Convience and functionality.

right, but they don't make a 6 bank isolator, and if your running 2 and 3 batts in parallel, will the isolator really help?

if I get a 3 bank isolator, say a 140 amp, hook the starting batt up to bank 1, the 2 batt bank to bank 2 and then the three bank to bank 3 on the iso it will charge all at the same time and at the correct level. I would also then hook up my xantrex charger to the isolator banks as well so it could charge the banks per the correct levels?

Sounds like you have it figured out. Call me if you need any help with this stuff. I like to get in and get dirty doing this kind of stuff. It is fun and I alway learn somthing.

does it matter if I get a bigger iso then my alt? as I may have to upgrade my alt later in time, would sure beat having to also buy another iso too.

It is all good as long as you don't have speakers wrapped around your complete tower attempting to sink your boat. HAHA . We need to get to the lake soon. Any ideas I have all this week in town.

well if we take your boat I'm free tonight tue and wed. My boat is in pieces was hoping to have it put together, but now I gotta figure where to add this piece of hardware. Guess i'll just get another bat box and put the charger and the isolator in it. ESP if I can just run my charger to the iso, hope someone chimes in.
