In AZ as well as many other states, it is required by law. Also, you need an observer when someone is boarding - no more trips with just you and a buddy.

A mirror here too....no observer, no flag. I think all the southern states are that way as the lakes are not as busy with watersport traffic, more fishermen. Alabama is the only one with wierd laws....have to have a huge mirror...so many square inches, but still no observer.

chpthril, has it been getting cold enough in the winter to kill of all the grass and duckweed in your lakes. It hasn't been cold enough for enough days here, and the grass is terrible. It's been cold, just not more than a day or two at a time. Mosquitos are very vibrant as well. The WAF drains the resevoirs to kill it off, but they wait until August, then they never fill back up......we have pretty poor water management around here. They should drain it now before we get the rainy months.

On the lakes you need an observer here, probably to keep an eye out for gators! But on the saltwater, you don't need one, just a mirror, and what is a flag for?!?!? (just kidding on that)

I have a friend that you don't want riding as observer....he will jump out of the boat underway to tackle an alligator.....dude is nuts.

Our water temps stayed in the low 50's, alot warmer than past years. Like you, not many cold days in a row. I've started to see some skeeters already here. Going to Slowes ( ) to get some yard spray before they get out of control.

SKEETERS! I hate those damn things! I have the kinda blood that attracts 'em for miles around yet my wife never gets bit! Of course i live right next to the river. DEET is my best friend!

So why do you have to drive hold the flag and handle rope duties at the same time? Are all the others napping?

We had one of those suction cup flags our first season out.

Got pulled over by the life guard and told that if the flag is not in someone hand that it would be a fine. He also said that this was the law for any lake in California.

In Missouri its only supposed to be up when the skiier is in the water. No one follows this rule but they do pull you over if your not following it. I saw in ovetons ( I think) a spring loaded flag holder. It sits on the side and you press the button and it pops up and then push it back down.

That means when they are riding too right? We pretty much never take ours down

We never really take ours down either, just when we put the boat up, and if we are cruising to the other side of the lake. It really does little good anyway.

Last year we were boarding in a cove that the locals kind of hang out in. It is kind of a T shape, so you can have like 4 boats in there, two in each long lines of the T, but there were only 2 boats in there, us and a Supra (not one of the locals). Well every time the Supra's rider fell (which was quite often) they shook their flag at us like they had a spider on the end of it or something. Even though we never got within 200 yards of them. After about an hour, I drove over to look just to see if they were nuts, or if they needed help or something. Probably got 100 yards from them, they are completely stopped changing riders, no one in the water, just a guy on the swim platform, we are down to a little over idle, and the observer starts shaking the flag AT us. After that, we decided that all Supra owner's are Weird. It may not be fair to other Supra owners, but well, that's how things go.

I know how ya feel some people around here are like that, in our ski cove that we tend to run there's a guy in a huge yacth who anchors right in the middle of the cove while im doning my slalom runs...numerous times and yelled at me/my dad because I shot my spay off the slalom got on his 2 billion dollar yacth.

But then again, some people around here get awfully close while we have riders out

Thats too funny. Did you catch where they were from? They probably were intimidated because they were sharing a cove with a Tigé What I hate is the people that yell at you for driving too close to the docks. Has happened a few times, driving past a resort dock, marked no wake for a 100 ft and we thought we were 100 ft but apperently mr bigshot covering his boat thought we were too close. So he flags us down yells 100ft you moron! I swear he going to bring out a tape measure, and we went our seperate ways and stayed clear of that guy.
