My dad said back in the day he could just hop off the platform and do it right behind the boat. He was going to try but the taps or something was throwing a little rooster tail where he would stand and there was no safe spot to step off onto so we cant do that.

It's all about foot position. Once you get it down, and you are going fast enough, you would be surprised what you can do.
