Cheap Tow Vehicle

I have a 2000 excursion with the 7.3 diesel and use it for towing. I like it alot and my wife hates it. She has a yukon xl denali that we will tow with 2-3 times a year and it gets it done but nothing like the excursion. Tow the boat (RZ4) in the summer and the 6 place enclosed snowmobile trailer in the winter. The boat is all short hauls longest is 60 minutes each way but we take it sledding on 6-8 hour trips where the large interior is nice you can crawl in the back and go to sleep! I have debated getting a truck but struggle with the idea as me wife and my 3 kids the truck is full and we always have people coming to the lake with us. Stay away from the 6.0 diesel excursion they have serious issues I would say get a 7.3 excursion.

That is some great 1st hand info. I've definilty been told to stay away from the 6.0. Although it seems there are a lot out there that have been "bulletproofed". Still, the 7.3 is such a great motor. I'll say, there are only two things I don't like about my SD. 1) zero storage space if the weather get rough. This of course could be fixed with some kind of bed cover. 2) there really isn't a ton of room for passengers on long hauls. 5 adults can defiantly fit. But the rear seats don't recline really at all. Nothing close to the level of comfort an excursion would offer. I'm curious, why does your wife hate the excursion? A denali is also on my list.

The denali definitely rides better than the excursion and drives "easier" if your just cruising around town. If your towing the RZ4 the excursion is definitely easier to drive. The Denali has a built in DVD with steering wheel controls which my wife likes as it keeps the 3 kids entertained on road trips and she doesn't have to take her hands off the wheel or turn around to mess with the dvd player. She doesnt like the smell of the diesel and it is louder as well. We have owned 2 of the 6.0 excursions and they both blew up in under 60k miles. I also considered the bullet proofed 6.0 but talked to a few mechanics that said unless you xray the block with a good machine to look for micro cracks it could still be a ticking time bomb even if it was bullet proofed. Alot of them developed cracks or warped before they had symptoms so people thought they fixed it? Scared me away from the 6.0.

I'm sure there's some guy out there rolling a half million miles on a "bulletproof " 6.0L, but in my experience there's no such thing with that engine. I have two buddies that own their own shops, and one specializes in diesel/fleet vehicles, and both of them will tell you the same thing. THEY LOVE 6.0L's. Not because they are a great engine, but because 6.0l owners are paying for their kids Christmas presents, and sending the family to disneyland.

Yeah I'm definitely staying clear of the 6.0. Just too many bad stories. The 7.3 on the other hand seems to be a monster that will essentially last forever. The market reflects this though.
