    Marine VHF??

Thinking of buying a handheld VHF to keep in the boat this year. Have never had one, and don't know a lot about them. Got a buddy in the process of buying a sea ray and its got a fixed unit mounted on it. Anybody here use them in their boats? What kinda range could I expect? I've read online all about them being "line of sight" and how the horizon comes into play, but I'm guessing that's more about open water use. What happens if your tucked back in a cove and have a buddy trying to find you? Anybody have a unit they suggest?

They are line of site and usually don't work well tucked in a cove. I guess it depends how high the walls of the coves are? At Lake Powell the rock walls are generally pretty tall. I use the Standard Horizon HX870. $210. It is the high end of hand held radios and is loaded. 6W, GPS and DSC calling. You might not want that many features?

The lowest model I would go with is HX150. $80
