Boat Shed Broken Into

So I get a call from my marina (has both wet and dry storage) where I keep my boat in their dry storage and they inform me that my unit and my neighbors has been broken into. They took my amps - rummaged through everything else including the v-drive access under the rear bench - Not sure what they were looking for there - but didnt take anything else.

In my neighbors stall, they took his boarding equipment and his boat keys.

Question to the forum is - what sort of camera would you get for the stall? I was thinking about a game camera. But I'd really like something that notified me when it detected movement. Thoughts or ideas?

I have a SWANN dvr system at my house as we are out a lot and don't trust one of my neighbors. Easy setup but will need power and a WiFi connection also. The DVR records for up to 30 days and will email you if movement is detected. IR cameras have excellent view at night and can use Iphone or such app to watch whenever you want.

Check out the security cams at this link... I've bought a few from them to monitor some of my portable toilets that get pushed over regularly... They've got a few that send pics directly to your cell phone or email...

Thanks for all of the input so far. There is no wifi up in the dry storage - only down in the wet slips. So that is really limiting available smaller cameras.

If you have power in the shed go to your cell phone provider and add a hot spot to your plan and put it in there. Verizon will give it to you for free and it's $10 a month or something close to that. Worth the peace of mind then you can link a dropcam or any of the above to it.

The trail cams work without wifi as long as you have Verizon or AT&T

Game cams are great for deer that wont knock it down with a baseball bat Seriously though, I would look for a solution that is storing the image off site so to speak. If they spot and take a game style cam with internal memory, you gained nothing.

I bought my cams with steel security boxes that lag bolt into trees and also came with masterlock lock/cable combo. That's neither here nor there since there are no trees in his storage, but I'm saying they can be secured. I would say more secure than a security cam hanging somewhere. Any camera can meet a bat or a rattle can of paint. The cams I'm talking about have a no glow IR flash for night time and either email or text you the photo the instant it's taken. Even if they get the cam, you get their photo, then you add the cam price to the stolen equipment value.

To bring this back to the root of the problem, shouldn't security and surveillance be the storage companies problem? If you can prove what was taken, they should be paying for it. That's just good business in my book. If I'm a paying customer looking for a storage solution, and I hear of a place that has theft problems that they don't take care of, I'm looking somewhere else..

Most of the time they renter is responsible for buying their own renters insurance. Your boat insurance should cover minus deductible that it. I would definitely see if the owner is willing to pay for or split some cost with everyone though to put a security system in place. Hopefully just an isolated deal but you never know with thieves.

I had a camper broken into by troubled teenage kids few years back and luckily a small town where I store it. Sheriff dept was too lazy to investigate so I did and found the guys within 24 hours. Gave the names to the sheriff and said see what happens when you do a little work!!

Thanks again guys. Still looking into cmera options. Please keep the ideas coming. There is power to the unit - so I can certainly plug somthing into the extention cord - but would rather not draw attention to it. My personal cell is on AT&T - so that'd be easy to add something to my plan.

And yes, I'm in discussions with the Marina about adding security cameras and covering / splitting the cost of the amps that were taken. Reading through the lease, there is a hold harmless clause - but agree that its good business.

Definitely look at a piper, uses wifi, it's a camera, motion detection, temperature sensor, does notifications very well, etc, even does automation with other devices if you'd ever want that, all in the small camera housing for 199 msrp with no ongoing service fee!

I have the non nv version at a second place and it's great.

99bison - sounds great but the issue becomes there is no wifi at the marina. I need something that is too high for folks to get to or will send me alerts / pictures over a celluar connection.
