    "New" 2001 21i

Hey folks. I don't mean to be annoying with another thread but I've recently acquired a new to me 2001 21i Tige. I'm new to boating and new to Tige and this website has already been a huge asset in making some repairs and updates that have been due since I bought it. Anyway, engine has about 370 hours, and it was well kept in most ways but not well updated. So far I've replaced the steering cable and the ignition switch (which caused me panic on trip 2 when it started shorting) and I have plans to refinish the teak platform, replace the cabin speakers (arriving today, thanks unexpected free Sunday same day delivery Amazon) and replace the rear transom cover that managed to blow off on the freeway back from the first trip. I'm hoping to be home free *for a while* after that. Anyway, just thought I would introduce myself in case I hit any roadbumps along the way or end up needing any solid answers I haven't found to questions I come up with. I'm currently trying to determine if I have a sporadic issue with prop ventilation or possibly transmission slip during acceleration, (very occasional and odd) and why my TAPS system seems to work only inconsistently. Thanks everyone!

Thanks guys! I'm glad you appreciate the 4th gen runner...love that thing. (I have the V8 4wd.) So far we've just been towing wakeboards, and I recently got a tube for it. I'll get skis eventually too. It's a family and friends boat...sorry if I'm answering your question like an ignoramus. :P

awesome to see another DD and the boat looks very good!!! ill tell you the best thing for teak is the startbight cleaning kit available at your local academy!! one day ill get around to doing a write up on how its done but if you need any help with that feel free to PM and i can answer most your questions about that!! now as far as the taps my guess would be with switch in the handle if its sporadic when it works and when it doesnt

So add to the list repairing the trailer...I simply took it down to get the batteries checked cuz they seemed to have drained to quickly this past week and as I was pulling in the shop (thankfully) the wheel bearing broke/exploded and bent right off the trailer. Sigh. Chad I'll send you a msg I've already begun the process!

              "New" 2001 21i

All right, a couple updates and a few questions. Teak makeover and new speakers are in, and finally had a chance to steer it with the new cable the way it should. All is well on those fronts. I'm still concerned about a couple things that have come up.

1st, the "slipping." I'm trying to determine whether this is an issue related to the transmission, or propeller ventilation. The problem seems to be most prevalent when doing a turn with a hard acceleration from idle. It seems to happen maybe 15% of accelerations before I hit 10mph. Today for the first time it also happened at a higher speed during a turn, I think, but it was an isolated incident. I lose "traction" and there's a lot of vibration in the boat...I'm attaching a photo of the prop as there are visible imperfections in the blade, and I'm suspecting this may be a contributing factor to a potential propeller vent issue.

2nd, I can't get the TAPS system to respond at all via the switch on the throttle any longer. Is this almost certainly a wiring failure? Should I just count on redoing/relocating the wiring for the switches to the dash?

3rd, I get concerned over the oil pressure gauge. Is it normal for it to be as low as pictured at idle? (It returns to an appropriate(?) level of ~40 psi while running)

Thanks Mike. Do you suppose a prop in this condition could be causing the problem I'm experiencing? I'll take a look at the ACME props.

Your prop looks like the original Cutter stainless steel prop. We replace most with an Acme prop for a smoother ride and better performance. How old is the oil, as oil becomes worn it does not old the same pressure when warm as new oil.

In looking so far it looks like what I should be looking at from acme is a 525, 13x11.5". Can anyone confirm this for a 2001 21i? And, to distribute some heavy expenses is this something that can be postponed to winter before addressing or is this bad to the point that I shouldn't be running it?

Does anyone think the "slip" problem I'm having could be transmission related?

As for the oil, it was changed this past winter, by the prior owner. It's been on my list to get to so I'll go ahead and put that at the top of the list.

I'm pretty sure there is one in the mix this year. Do a search for MEAD 2015 for more information on the event!

If you are interested in replacing it ACME Propellers makes a great 3 blade that work well on our boats. Not sure which prop guys are running on your model?
It might be wise to get a new ACME and have yours rebuilt for a spare, if you don't have one.
Not sure about the oil pressure, maybe try a manual gauge to compare?
I am on record as being in love with the Watco teak oil finish. But it becomes a little problematic because it is actually not an oil. It is a FINISH, think varnish. What happened to my deck after I put a coat on it the second or third time, is that it started to look like it had a lacquer type finish on it. And it became slippery like it was covered with a finish, not an oil. I then had to sand all of the Watco off and start all over. It still might be worth it, as the Watco stuff looked good for most of the summer, whereas oil seemed to only stay good for a couple of trips. I found it best to put some oil on the teak, then a very thin layer of Watco.
                        Be excellent to one another.

The 525 would be a solid upgrade to that factory SS cutter 4 blade.

I followed a different approach recommended from someone on here. I sanded down to nothing, top and bottom. I then used a Dremel to get in the hard to reach cracks and corners. Wiped it down 3 or 4 times with a damp rag to get all the dust off. Placed a coat of starbrite teak oil on and let dry 24 hours. Put on another coat and let it dry 24 hours. Did this over and over again until the deck wouldn't take anymore. 8 coats total. It looked great (IMO) and lasted until we sold it. One down side. It was pretty slippery the first few times out. We have since bought a new boat- but we sure liked the teak swimdeck. It's a shame how many people neglect them. Nice boat, and welcome to the forum!

Re: "slippage"... It could be a number of things but what you describe sounds a lot like what I experienced (I described as slippage periodically during acceleration and/or during turns, especially when pulling a slalom skier). I suspected prop problems but my issue was low transmission fluid. It caused some damage that required repair (rather than replacement). I had checked the fluid a week or two prior but it had leaked between the time I had checked and when I had the problems. I now routinely check tranny fluid after the first few min of running the boat every few days of use (after its warmed) to ensure I haven't leaked any fluid that could result in a transmission problem. I haven't had issues since.
