Raptor Motors in '15?

The design configurator is back up today and is showing Raptor motors in the options.
a 400, a 440, and a SC version with no number attached. Interesting, very interesting. Discuss.....ad nauseaum.....lol

I got to drive an RZR with the 400 Raptor in it...Let me just say it was a BEAST...no weight, with weight...over all very impressed with this motor. I also got to ride in a Z1 with this motor while doing some surfing, again I was very impressed with not only the motor but the boat in general.

There will a 400 which is standard in all boats except the ASR. 440 which will be standard in ASR and optional in all other hulls. Then the super charged beast which will be a 575 I believe.

I'm going to start an over/under pool on those motors...200 hours. Garbage engines. Absolute garbage and the fact that Indmar is marinizing them, there must be ford corporate backing to cover warranty claims because there aren't any techs who work on them just tools who plug in a computer to look up a code. Add to that an unproven cat back system in an unproven forced induction, aluminum head marine application!!!??? Reminds me of a sunseeker, sleek and pretty but built like crap and horribly thought out. Totally disappointed, not afraid of change like some will say but disappointed that we will now be dealing with these. Sorry, no interest and no thanks. I'm not even going to say I told you so because you should know better.

I don't completely disagree with you, but with the last 350's rolling off the line around January what is the other option? Run the 5.3 like PCM plans? I have had a 5.3 in a truck and sure don't want that gutless wonder in a boat!! I'm guessing they wouldn't even bother if these engines were going to run 200 hours or less. It would put Ford, Indmar, Tige, Malibu, Supra, Moomba, and anyone else running Indmar out of business QUICK!!

It would not hurt Ford one iota, the amount of marine engines compared to car engines ,is an absolute spit in the water

I would not even think about buying the first year run of this engine to let them get all the kinks worked out, but not hearing any real issues with them in the raptors and I would guess that a much larger percentage of those trucks are being driven harder than their f150 couterparts. indmar has been around for a while and I would think they have a lot of good engineers on the payroll and have invested a lot of hours into testing this application. ford has a vested interest in the success of this as well as it's their name stamped on the block. I have not been in boating long enough to remember when the changeover happened from the tried and true 302/351 blocks that were in all the waterski boats to the current chevy block, but betting a lot of people said the same things above.

time will tell and unfortunately, issues will come up and I feel sorry for the first manufacturer to have an engine blow and the crapstorm that will ensue on wakeworld even though you don't hear about any mechanical issues with the chevy blocks today..

This was probably said back when they came out with Ford marine 351 engines in the 70s and wow I guess that turned out to be a blunder , oh wait those old 351 are still out there and running strong, I dont know where you get your data from but please post it and enlighten me for Ive been working on all makes and models of trucks and cars for over 60 years and havent seen these major failures you speak of !!!!!

I'm really surprised how some people act like Ford or Indmar have never built an engine before. Brand loyalty aside, both companies know what they are doing. The fact that the base motor is now 400HP even in the R20 should have some people drooling. I was just surprised that they have already made the change for '15, I expected at least a couple years of the GM based Indmar's in the Tige's before the switch to the Ford based motor.

Hmmmm not all engines are destined marine engines , a rep from merc once told me , a marine engine works much harder, he likened it to pulling a 3000 pound trailer up at 30 percent incline at 70 mph behind your vehicle .... I hope it works for Ford and dodge if they ever decide to step into the market , how about a hellcat motor in a boat ?? Enough to make you drool !!!!

There will be no GM 350's after January to put into boats. It's not really a choice, as the 350 will not be produced. I guess they could of ran the 6.0 or 6.2 chevy. I was also told PCM will be running the 5.3 as their base motor somewhere around 315 hp, but all that would fit is the RZR/ R20 as a base. Then the jump would be to the 6.0 at 415 hp. Word I got is Tige has had 4-5 test boats with the fords they have been running all season to the tune of 3000+ hours to this point. 0 failures and no major issues. I am ordering a 15 and have no worries, just like I didn't worry about ordering a 14 with the switch to indmar.

True, but answer me this. What current GM based marine engine was designed by GM and cast solely for the marine application, only later to be DOT'ized for cars and trucks The only one I can think of is the Merc 3.0 4-cyl. In all my years, i do not recall ever seeing a 3.0 in a car. But, IIRC, it was a close cousin to the old 2.5 cast iron, which was a car engine. Id be willing to bet that nearly every GM based marine block used in the last 20 years in consumer trailer and small cruiser boats, was a car/truck block first. So no reason no to believe that Ford cant put together a solid marine engine thats based off tha Ford truck block. If not, it wont be because it was a truck engine first.

Oh nobody has , but certain blocks have thicker passage and webbing etc, and are destined to work for marine apps, I know the merc 470/170 stern drive was spec built for marine apps , ( I have one in a 1981 glas ply ) but I hope it works and it should !!!

So the GM cast Cadi and Vett engines are made this way, but the Ford TRUCK engine is not? We dont have very tall mtns here in NC, but I cant remember the last time i was passed by a Sedan DeVille or Corvette towing a 3K trailer @ 70 MPH up hill

Not trying to mock you or call you out, but just put some thoughts out there. Ford is being discounted as a serious, viable marine engine supplier, for marinizing a truck engine, that started out originally as a street engine. On the other side of the coin, we are praising GM, which did/does the very same thing. I cant think of a single GM block thats been used for sonsumer marine applications, that sis not start out as a street engine.

Im not familiar with that engine, so my questions is sincere. Is that a GM cast block or an actual Merc block? If it was, what vehicle and years was it used? A quick search seems that a 470 was not a production config, but a Hybrid short stroke 502
