Belt keeps shredding.

    Belt keeps shredding.

    I'm getting towed in as we speak. The last 3 times we've been out the engine belt keeps shredding. We've took it in and changed the pullies. The alternator and the impeller are both new. What is causing the engine belt to just tear up?

      Well we changed out both tensioning pullies. I was thinking maybe the alternator isn't bolted in right. Is this possible?

        Yes its possible.(think alignment)

        Could also be the alignment of the tensioners.

        But as Chp stated you can change pulleys all day long, if the ALIGNMENT isnt correct you will need to carry a lot of spare belts.

            its a mercruiser on a 2003 20v. We had brought the boat to a mechanic so i would have thought that if he was going to go through the trouble to change pulleys then he would have checked the alignment. so frustrating

              Basic engine 101:12...Not all mechanics are created equal.

              Take it back...let him find the error of his ways.

                  those are very helpful links! this all started when we had to change the alternator and impeller. I've got a hunch that they might not have been installed properly. how do you get enough room back there to run the straight edge test. i can barely see back there as it is. times like this i wish i had a direct drive

                    Today we took the alternator off just to see. Turns out we had confused one of the spacers with a washer and had it on the wrong bolt when we reinstalled it. Took her out today and she ran beautifully. Pretty sure that was the problem. Thanks for all the help!
