Truck tonneau cover

So, after all the debate over the summer about my potential truck choice, the results are in. My awesome wife traded her absolute piece of $hit S class Mercedes in for a Chevy 2500 HD with the Vortec. That's right, she did it by herself! And she did GOOD!
One of the reasons I wanted a truck was to be able to put boards, skis, etc back there and lock them. I was looking at the retractable ones like the RollBAK, but I've read some really bad reviews on it. It also allowed access to the stake pockets so I could add a rack system later to haul bikes.
I'm listening to all opinions and looking forward to them. I hope I don't start a war like I did last time with the truck debate!

You definitely want a hard cover then? If not, I would recommend the soft cover that I have. It is on hinges or rolls up, pretty nice for $325.

A pickup with a cover on it is kind of the out of sight, out of mind type of thing but if you want real protection, the fiberglass ones would be the way to go. The retractable covers are nice but they take a big chunk out of your bed for the rollup mechanism.

I'm pretty sure I want a hard lockable cover, but the one you have is pretty nice! Piece of mind for me I guess.
I've heard that about the canisters taking up a lot of room. The fiberglass ones sure are pricey, plus I'd lose access to the stake pockets. Time is on my side at least. I won't have the boat out until April anyway.
On a separate note, what do you have for steps? I really like the AMP retractable ones, but $1200 is a bit much right now.

I went with the hardsell style and would not change a thing..ok maybe it could cost less. I spent $700 bucks on it. It locks down nice very quiet and keeps everything safe and dry. My motherinlaw has the rollback type on her toyota and has had problems with it since day 1. I guess you really need to decide how important the stake pockets are going to be. IMPO the hardshell is the best.

I went with the Bak Flip covers. They are a little pricey however they are great. You have alot of options with them as far as leaving them partially open. If your tailgate has a lock on it then the cover is lockable. They don't have the roll mechansim to deal with. Takes about 5 mins to remove them and about 15 mins to put back on if you have to take them off. We just open 2 panels up and throw all the boards, wet towels, etc.. in there after a day on the lake and nothing blows out. my stake pockets are still accessible with this cover.

Have a look at the Retrax covers, they are the nicest roll top cover I have ever sold, if you were in canada I could give you a real sweet deal.

I got a snugtop tonneau cover. Hands down the best. Looks good and keeps everything safe and dry. I've stood on top of it. It's easy to get off to put big items(dirtbike/quad) in the back. I would'nt even consider any other kind.

Curious of what bad things you heard about the rollbak i was thinking about getting one but i would like to know what you heard so i dont make a big mistake.

I've read quite a few reviews that the fit and finish was weak and after a few years it wears out. Also, I read complaints about leaking. Having said that, quite a few others love them. Who knows...

I don't have steps on mine yet, haven't found any that I like(besides those AMP ones). I like the running boards that come on the Ford Raptor but I can't find anything even close to those in the aftermarket world.

Get the UnderCover. Best tonneau cover, period.

When I got my truck, I wanted exactly what you are describing. I did a ton of research, read every review, asked lots of questions, and called several manufacturers to talk directly with them about their products.

The absolute best tonneau cover is the UnderCover. Accept no substitutes. Around $600 when I got mine. Lightweight, easy to remove and install, strong enough to stand on, securely lockable, bone dry, everything. It's a solid piece so no hinges to give you problems, no fabrics to dry/wear out, etc.

If WA says it is good, then it probably is, that guy does his homework! What about getting a hard cover and mounting a bike rack to the top of that? Just another suggestion that may work with a hard top and not needing stake body holes available.

The undercover looks terrific. But it looks like he would have to give up the access to the stake pockets. Looks like he might have to compromise on that one.

Knowing Waboating...his research has been, um, thorough, to say the least, so I would vote on the Undercover just because I watched this guy work.

During my research, I read of several people doing exactly that. You'd want to avoid the reinforcing ribs on the underside, but that would be easy.

Just take the UnderCover off in those cases. The stake pockets are accessible with the cover removed. It comes off in about 60 seconds. You can do it alone, but a second person makes it a bit less cumbersome (due to size, not weight).

When it's off, you can hang it on the wall of your garage so it takes up zero floor space. They even include the hooks.
