Advice on Boat Purchase

I think the whole problem is the democrats build the centurions in california, and the rebublicans build the tiges in texas.
Most centurions have a more liberal design and the tiges more conservative.
Now as larry the cable guy would say thats funny .

I'm most appreciative to members of this forum. Since I'm new to wakeboard boats, I don't really have a preference for any brand. Also, I need advice.

My primary goal with the wakeboard boat is to maximize the time with my kids and their friends for the next few years. I envision weekends on Lake Texoma wakeboarding, tubing, surfing and waterskiing. Most likely we'll have four kids and four adults in the boat. We'll also be with a few friends that also have boats - Mastercrafts and Malibus.

I'm looking at two boats - 05 22v and an 08ve. There are distinct features to each boat. I plan to spend the next week deciding between the two.

hmm..not to ask too much but if you are going to be thinking about those two boats...wanna share what you think are the pros and cons of each with us here? I only ask this because I think there might be some thoughts you have that are very valid and then others that...well..maybe are valid to you and I don't want to take away from that but some people on this forum might be able to lend a different light on somethings things. Somethings you might not have thought were important and others that maybe you do feel are important and really don't seem to come into the skeme(sp) of things. Does that make sense? For example...one difference between those two models are the sundeck area. You maybe thinking one is really more important to have than the other. But after getting a few opinions from this forum you might have a different thought about it.

I think everone here would agree that no matter what boat you get you will be having lots and lots of fun. And everyone here seem to be straight up about it's just their opinion and thats it.

Let the forum know if you have more questions... there is a lot of good info on this site.

I thought about our purchase for 2-3 months before deciding on the model. We were going back and forth between a 05 22v and a 06 22ve.

I've narrowed my boat purchase decision to the following:

1) Wait till spring and see what other boats are on the market
2) Buy an 06 Centurion Avalanche - http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/boa/2036661578.html - this boat can be purchased for $31,000
3) Buy an 05 Tige 22v - http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/boa/1992556356.html - this boat can be purchased for $30,000

I'm going to take the Centurion out on Wednesday. I'll also drop by an take another look at the Tige.

I've had some great advice from the members of this forum as well as another forum.

The centurion ad reads like the motor is newer than the rest of the boat. Engines fail all too often, but I would be sure to ask why. '58 hours on motor'. Only 15 hours per year might be worse than 150 hours per year. The centurion is very good looking and will appeal to a much broader audience at resale time.

I'm local to the area where the Centurion is. Haven't looked at it, but it does sound like the motor has been replaced. I became a Centurion owner in 2003 when we purchased one at the boat show. Like a lot of people, we wanted a MC, Tige, or a Nautique, but basic economics lead us to purchase the Centurion. Other than basic maintenance, this has been a great boat with zero issues. When it's time for a new one I certainly would look at Centurions again. Depends on who the local dealer is, finances etc. I only mention this as someone who is looking at Centurions shouldn't be scared of them. Mine doesnt list at all either.

I work on these boats every day. People ask me about buying boats all the time. First thing I tell them ABC...Anything But Centurion.....I really dont care for the boats at all. My friend as an 05 Avy and I have spent enough time out on it to know that I would never own one or recommend one to someone. I work on a handful of them on a regular basis and have yet to find anything I like about them over a Tige,Malibu,CC,MC or Moomba. My buddies has the side swipe exhaust..this has to be the single worst idea ever this boat is so friggin loud after 30 inuted it just takes all the fun out of being on the water. Now this might be a regional thing but they dont seem to do so well on resale in my area. This could be different where you are. test driving is always the best. maybe the things I dont like about it you will love..you know different strokes for different folks type deal.. I am not bashing centurion. I am just giving you MY Opinion as a boat mechanic and boat owner. I hope your search goes well and good luck with what ever boat you go with.

Here are some general observations about the two boats I tested earlier today (06 Centurion Avalance Storm & 05 Tige 22v):

1) Both of the boats handled very well, however both were a major departure from traditional I/O's - in fact it took a little getting used too (is this normal)
2) Both of these boats turn on a dime - pretty cool compared to I/O's
3) The Centurion was in better condition than the Tige
4) The Centurion only had 58 hours on the boat and motor - the tech hooked up a laptop computer which showed the hours by rpm ranges
5) The sideswipe exhaust on the Centurion was not too loud and candidly it sounded pretty cool - when both boats were wide open the sound was comparable, however the Centurion was louder at idle and lower speeds
6) The Tige was slightly quicker out of the hole
7) The Centurion plained out quicker
8) The wake on both boats was excellent
9) The stereo was better on the Centurion
10) There was more room in the Centurion
11) The red color of the Centurion had more "pop" than the lime green Tige

The conditions for the two test drives were different. The wind and thus the waves were greater on the lake where we tested the Centurion, while the water was calmer on the lake where we tested the Tige. Also, the deep V on the Centurion handled the waves just fine.

I am inclined to hire an inspector to go over the Centurion. Does anyone have some advice on how to locate and hire a qualified inspector in the Ft. Worth area?

Although I am not 100% confident that I will buy the Centurion, it’s very close. I need to hire a qualified inspector to verify the mechanical integrity. I’m also a little hesitant to buy a boat after only looking at two boats.

Glad you test drove both and I am not suprised you found them to be very comparible. Some here will tell you otherwise but they have no real world experience with both boats.

5) No matter what boat you end up getting please look into FAE (Fresh Air Exhaust). If you don't for yourself, then do it for your significant others and your friends you plan on taking with you

3)7)9)10)11) all point to you liking the Centurion. So when you say it's very close I don't exactly understand. Reading your comments to me doesn't sound close at all. Or you just left out positives about the 22v.

Seems to me out of those boats, and YOUR personal preferences, you like the Centurion. Whatever works for you as long as when it's all done you are a happy new boat owner. I would think most here would respect your decision either way. Some my grumble but that is to be expected. No worries.

Don't be inclined but instead do it...hire an inspector.

You said yourself you're in now hurry, and you said you have only looked at two boats. Only you can know whether to pull the lever or wait to see if something better comes along.
