my 93 tige still has the same steering cable.my sercret keep the cable greased with marine grease,drain all the water from the hull and a ground strap from the rudder to the engine.or maybe just lucky.

Ive gone over this topic many times , everybodys steering cable will fail at a different rate dependent on the water that the boat is used in.
When the boat is in the water electricity is generated through the rudder to to the steering cable and it begines to eat up the cable, we fight that here in florida on all the boats I dont care what cable you install.
Ground cable has to be added from the rudder arm to rudder port from rudder port to prop shaft strut, from strut to steering bracket , from strut to engine block, this is the same process if you look at an i/o outdrive.
With proper maintenance and ground straps we havent had many failures.

I have found in talking with people that the older tige's last much longer. My friends 97 is orginial too. Also it depends how much water let in the boat. There was a time or two I had a leaky ballast bag and didn't know and filled the whole bottom of the boat with water for hours. (wonder why it took forever to plan, but man what a surf wake lol)
